This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to monitor and evaluate remedial massage treatments, both from an individual client and whole of practice perspective.

Hello and welcome to the Remedial Massage Clinic.
Course description
The practical application of all skills will lead to a strong understanding of how to work with a range of clients, in an effective manner in order to stabilise conditions allowing clients to live a better quality of life. Refining practical skills within a clinical environment at RMIT allows for professional growth with the very exciting and emerging Diploma of Remedial Massage.
How this course runs
Note: Clinic sessions will run each Semester from week 1 through to week 17. Classes finish in week 16. Students are expected to attend all of these sessions.
- The Remedial Massage clinic will be delivered through face-to-face clinical sessions which you are required to attend on a weekly basis. Clinic timetable information will be discussed within the first week of class.
- Professional Practice as per Industry Standards are expectations within Student Clinic. This work integrated learning (WIL) space incorporates knowledge understanding and application and contextualisation of behaviours learnt within the course.
- Knowledge such as WHS and Infection control, contextualising legal and ethical considerations as per a Health Care setting, clear communication, understanding of body systems, application of body region assessment and treatment skills and techniques, consideration of chronic disease and lifestyle presentations and having to adapt and manage treatments.
- As part of your responsibilities, at times you will either be the Clinic Manager or the second in command (2iC) and run the clinic session. This is a shared rostered responsibility between all your cohort.

Assessments
- At the beginning of your course you will be given your hard copy of the Remedial Massage Student Clinic Logbook. This is a very important document that contains assessment evidence vital to your gaining your Diploma. Keep it stored in your locker!
- All assessments within this log book must be completed satisfactorily within the Student Clinic as they meet both unit and course assessment evidence needs. It is the students responsibility to notify the Clinic Supervisor that they need to be assessed.
- As Student Clinic is classified as a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) several course units will have some assessments that need to be performed during this time. As such, you will be assessed each time you are in clinic. Refer to your respective unit Syllabus and the Clinic Logbook for further details.
- Once assessments have been completed satisfactorily, and the Assessor and student have signed and dated the feedback, you must scan them as one document and upload to the respective unit.
- The Diploma of Remedial Massage requires each student to provide evidence of completing 200hours of clinic and to have successfully treated 100 plus clients by the end of their course, Semester Three (3).
- This Remedial Massage Student Clinic Unit has two (2) units clustered specifically to it; HLTMSG008 Monitor and evaluate remedial massage treatments and HLTAAP003 - Analyse and respond to client health information. Any assessments for these two units are to be uploaded to this space.
Canvas Learning Management System (LMS Links to an external site.): is the online system for all course and unit and assessment communication. This is also the space to where assessments are to be uploaded.
Student Clinic Expectations
Uniform
Every Student Clinic, every organised work outside placement and every on-campus practical assessment requires students to be wearing the designated RMIT Student Clinic Uniform.
- RMIT Polo Top. This can be purchased from the RMIT Student Merchandise store Links to an external site.
- Black work pants (not jeans, tracksuit pants, active wear, shorts nor skirts)
- Black closed toe work shoes (not runners)
- Black socks
- Hair up, nails short with no nail polish
- your own black or blue pen (these colours only as they are the legal record keeping requirement)
- your own hygiene pack to keep in your locker (toothbrush, toothpaste, hair tie, nail clippers, deodorant)
Because of the type of material used in the Polo tops, and the physicality of performing several treatments consecutively, your Clinic Uniform (especially the Polo Top) must be taken home and washed after every wear.
Clinic arrival and setup times and attendance
- Arrival: Arrival times are either thirty (30) minutes prior (rostered Clinic Manager and 2iC) or fifteen (15) minutes prior (student clinicians) to timetabled start time.
- Setup: This is considered professional best practice in Industry. This time is for allocating clients to students, setting-up the clinic space, preparing client files, and gathering all of your resources prior to your first booking.
- Attendance: If students do not attend clinics, it may result in repeating the whole clinic, including all hours. In order to meet course requirements, each Semester has a certain number of clients that must have been treated and a certain number of clinic hours they must have completed. For each clinic session missed, you must apply for a Special Consideration and arrange to make up the missed clinic session. This is student responsibility.
- Timetable: Each clinic session runs for three (3) hours, either in the morning or afternoon.

- In adherence to legal ethics and considerations of confidentiality and privacy the reception area must not be left unattended when Clinic is running.
- Outside of this, the door must be locked at all times and the computer and booking system completely shut down.
- If the reception area is left unattended the Student Clinic manager and 2iC will be given an not yet satisfactory (NYS) grade for management tasks for the session.
Work Health & Safety
- Personal items must be stored in your student locker to prevent trip hazards and for general cleanliness of the treatment space.
- Resources that can be brought into clinic are; your Student Clinic Logbook, your own reference notes, your own black or blue pen, water in a sealed container.
- Medications for management of a personal health condition can be brought in and must be stored safely in your cubical. Monitoring of symptoms, taking medications and storing medications are entirely your responsibility.
- There can be no food or other drinks consumed within the clinic space.
- All other resources required for a successful Student Clinic will be provided by RMIT.

Assessment Task 1 (1.1-1.2)- Knowledge Assessments
These assessments you are to complete in your own time.
Assessment Task 1.1 - Clinic Entrance Knowledge
For this assessment you are asked to answer questions which relate to the clinic policies, procedures and knowledge that you will/may come across in your student clinic time at RMIT. You are required to complete this task in the first two weeks of commencing.
Assessment Task 1.2 - Knowledge Questions
For this assessment you are asked to answer questions which relate to your knowledge of analysing and responding to client health information.
Assessment Task 2 (2.1-2.2)- Practical Assessment
Assessment Task 2.1 - Log of Review clients
This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to monitor and evaluate remedial massage treatments. You must treat a minimum of 5 different clients with at least 3 treatments per client (initial, 2nd 3 rd) You MUST: - Seek client feedback about previous treatment impacts - Evaluate the effectiveness and impacts from previous treatment to clients physical, mental, spiritual and emotional wellbeing - Discuss any adverse reactions or any other relevant post treatment information - Discuss and review prescribed corrective exercises, stretches, and ergonomics - Added necessary modifications post treatment - Accurately documented progress or regress in client file - Seek additional client feedback post treatment
Assessment Task 2.2 - Client conditions
This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to analyse and respond to various client health conditions. You must treat a minimum of 6 different clients presenting with different conditions. You will assess client health status based on: • observations • physical assessments • interpretation of client tests
