Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to determine the remedial massage needs of athletes and to adjust assessment and treatment to develop preventative and injury related treatment strategies for athletes and other sport active people.

This unit applies to remedial massage therapists.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

2.5 Provide athlete education in relation to self-massage techniques as required

2.6 Provide recommendations for ongoing support packages to aid recovery from injury

2.7 Integrate sport related information and research evidence into treatment plan and clearly document treatment details

Musculoskeletal Pathology will be delivered as a 3 hour class. Various pathologies will be covered on a weekly basis, through theory and practical demonstrations.

Assessment Tasks

Knowledge and Skills Assessments:

 

There will be 1 case study research assignment, 3 case study practical assessments, 1 Sports massage practical assessment, and 1 Thermotherapy practical assessment to assess your ability to apply the skills and knowledge delivered in class and outlined in the course notes for Musculoskeletal Pathology.

 

 

 

 

Skills Assessment

 

Case Study Practical Assessments - Each student will be required to complete three case study practical assessments.  Each student will be required to attend their allocated assessment time and complete a case study that will examine the student’s ability to assess and treat the needs of the athlete. You must receive a Satisfactory (S) result for all the skills contained within the practical observation checklist to pass the requirements for this assessment task.

 

WIL/Clinic Skills Observational Checklists

 

Thermotherapy Practical Assessment.

Each student will be required to administer thermotherapy application to a patient within their supervised WIL/clinic setting. You must demonstrate the skills outlined on the observation checklist to be deemed satisfactory for this assessment task. Your supervisor is required to assess you against the evidence checklist for this task. It will be your responsibility to have this assessment task completed and submitted by the due date.

 

Sports Massage Practical Assessment

This practical assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to perform sports massage (pre, & post event) to a sport active person. Your ability to incorporate pre, & post event massage techniques specific to the demands & impacts of the sporting activity will be demonstrated.

 

 

Knowledge Assessment

 

To be deemed as satisfactory for this subject, you will be required to complete one case study research assignment examining your essential knowledge and understanding of musculoskeletal pathologies. The student is to collect and present documentation on three (3) separate case studies:

  • Three different individual athletes (pro, semi-pro, amateur)
  • Each from different sporting backgrounds
  • All presenting with a different pathology

Students are required to:

a)    Gather information from the client and their trainers and/or healthcare professionals

b)    Research the pathology

c)    Create a treatment plan based on the athlete’s condition and obtain informed consent

d)    Perform treatment specifically designed for presenting pathology, including subjective and objective assessments, on at least three (3) separate sessions

e)     Document all evidence for submission including client history forms (LOOTRADIOPS), a 1,500 word report on each pathology, and photo/video evidence of the athlete training and implementing homework

Bring 2 clean towels to class, wear loose comfortable clothing and closed toe shoes. 

 

Important information regarding Assessment Tasks:

 

You are permitted to have a maximum of 2 resubmissions for this course. However each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once. 

Resubmissions are not automatic and will only be approved at the discretion of the Program Coordinator, after consultation with the teacher.

All students will be contacted with 7 days by their course coordinator in regards to  resubmission completion dates.

   

Please note an opportunity to repeat clinical placement is not guaranteed and will be at the discretion of the Clinical Coordinator/Program Manager.

 

EXTENSION OR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION

If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to attend on the due date of an assessment (e.g. test, examination, oral, etc.) OR you do attend, but your performance has been affected, you may submit an APPLICATION FOR SPECIAL CONSIDERATION within 5 working days of the due date. If Special Consideration is granted, you will be given the opportunity to complete/repeat the assessment task at a later date. If due to illness or other unforeseen circumstance, you are unable to submit by the due date (e.g. assignment, report, project etc.):

This must be lodged with the Program Coordinator 1 working day before the original due date. If granted, you will have the opportunity to submit up to 7 days later than the original due date.
