Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake a straightforward project or a section of a larger project. This unit addresses the management of projects, including developing a project plan, administering and monitoring the project, finalising the project, and reviewing the project to identify lessons learned for application to future projects

Learning Outcomes


You will learn how to apply project-management skills and how to meet the requirement of timelines, quality standards, budgetary limits and other requirements set for a project.


Details of Learning Activities

This course is structured to provide students with the optimum learning experience. Students will participate in a combination of group and individual learning activities. These activities will be provided through a combination of face to face teacher/student delivery plus classroom work time. Students will need to research a specific topic and present the content to the other students with the feedback from the teacher.  Additional learning activities will also be provided to students to complete outside of timetabled time.

In order to achieve competency in this unit, you must provide:

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the skills to: 

  • communication and negotiation skills to work with team members and other stakeholders to maintain project schedules
  • communication skills to relate to people with diverse abilities and from diverse backgrounds in a culturally appropriate way
  • literacy skills to read, write and review a range of documentation
  • numeracy skills to:
  • analyse data
  • compare time lines and promotional costs against budgets
  • planning and organising skills to develop, monitor and maintain implementation schedules.

 

Knowledge evidence:

 organisation's mission, goals, objectives and operations and how the project relates to them

  • organisational structure, and lines of authority and communication in the organisation
  • relevant legislation and codes from all levels of government that may affect aspects of business operations, including:
  • anti-discrimination legislation
  • codes of practice
  • environmental issues
  • ethical principles
  • WHS
  • privacy laws.

 

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must ensure:

  • access to workplace project documentation

demonstration of all required skills, knowledge and performance in a workplace-based project.

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1 - Project Plan

Due Date: Week  8– Sunday (end of day)  - upload on Canvas

Presentation to teacher with discussion:  Week 9 (in class)

Individual assessment with integrated team collaboration (evidence to be submitted)

Purpose: This assessment is designed to demonstrate your ability to define and plan a project.

Details:

You will present your findings in a professionally prescribed written document.   Much of this work will be undertaken both outside of class time and in the “Practical Sessions”.  You are encouraged to use all the resources at your disposal.

Requirements: You will be required to analyse a brief, define the parameters of a project and plan the project. As part of the project plan you will complete a set of project management tools. Tools included will be:

  • Gantt chart,
  • active budget developed in Excel,
  • quality standard,
  • risk management plan with risk assessments and
  • other tools to create a useful and realistic project plan.

All you documentation will need to be be signed off by a project sponsor (role played).

 

Assessment 2 - Project Completion and Reflection

Date handed out: Week 8

Due Date: Week 14 – Sunday (end of day)  - upload on Canvas

Presentation: Week 15 – in class

Individual assessment with integrated team collaboration (evidence to be submitted)

Purpose: This assessment is designed to demonstrate your ability to monitor, finalise and review a project.

Details:

You will present your findings in a professionally prescribed written document.   Much of this work will be undertaken both outside of class time and in the “Practical Sessions”.  You are encouraged to use all the resources at your disposal. Your completed plan will include all budget adjustments,  a finalised Gantt chart, risk management plan and other finalised documentation.

Meeting minutes and other documentation will need to be included.

Submission Requirements   You should:
  • Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date.  
  • Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
  • When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes a declaration and statement of authorship.
  • Each page of your assessment should include footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment, unit code and title and page numbers.

Late Submission Procedures 

 

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates. 

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time, by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Where an extension of greater than seven days is needed, you must apply for Special Consideration.  Applications for special consideration must be submitted no later than two working days after the assessment task deadline or scheduled examination.

Resubmissions:

 

If you are found to be unsuccessful in a particular Course Assessment Task (or you do not submit/attend) you will be allowed one resubmission.  Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission.  

 

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

 

Grading & re-submissions

 

Successful re-submissions will contribute a CAG only (Competency Achieved Grading) result to your overall grade for the course.
