Course Description

This course will provide an introduction to a number of key areas of current technology and work practice used in the audio sphere of the broadcast industry in Australia, and introduce you to location recording practice.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Discuss production documentation and requirements with relevant people to determine scope of sound recording operations

1.2 Plan sound recording operations according to production documentation

1.3 Organise script extracts for sound recordists as required

1.4 Visit all locations to identify problems that may arise during sound recording operations and plan accordingly

1.5 Prepare work plan as required, and brief relevant people accordingly

1.6 Check that selected sound equipment and accessories meet production requirements

2.1 Confirm with relevant people that appropriate sound equipment, accessories and consumables are available and in working order prior to shoot

Performance Criteria:

3.1 Determine optimum positioning of boom and microphone for recording dialogue and sound effects during technical run throughs and rehearsals

3.2 Supervise recording and advise sound recordists as required

3.3 Monitor quality of recorded sound and request additional recordings as required

3.4 Confirm sound recordings are backed up regularly to counteract equipment malfunction

This unit covers the skills and knowledge necessary for audio production within broadcast environments such as television and radio related industries, specifically including location recording techniques and practice.


Details of Learning Activities

Welcome to Coordinate Sound Recording Operations on Location

This course will be delivered using face-to-face classes and practical ProTools lab sessions. Some support material and resources will be found here in Canvas. In this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to plan, coordinate and execute location sound recording for broadcast video productions.

This course will provide an introduction to a number of key current technologies and work practices used within the audio sphere of the broadcast industry in Australia. You'll become familiar with a number of key location ENG sound recording practices.

What you will learn in this course

On successful completion of this competency, you will have developed the skills and knowledge required to coordinate and produce high-quality location sound recordings for broadcast video applications. After planning and executing the location sound recording you will use ProTools to produce a final stereo sound mix which is embedded into the video shot on location. 

How the course is delivered

The course will be delivered using face-to-face classes, a location video shoot and ProTools post-production lab sessions.

  • Plan, coordinate and supervise sound recording operations on location for broadcast video productions.
  • Monitor sound recording on location in line with safety and production requirements.
  • Liaise with performers, sound recordists and production team to achieve production requirements.

 

Knowledge Evidence:

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  •  Describe the information that is typically found in production documentation and work plans
  •  List and describe the common equipment, accessories and consumables required for recording sound on location
  • Explain the relevance of post-production requirements to sound recording
  •  Explain the issues and challenges that typically arise when coordinating sound recording operations on location, and how to address them
  • Outline the safety considerations that relate to the supervision of sound recording on location.

You will have five 2-hour supervised ProTools lab sessions in which to complete this assignment in weeks 6-10. If additional time is required to complete the sound mix, you will need to use the ProTools lab in your own time.

Due date: Week 14 (Wednesday 14th October)


The purpose of this assessment

Completing this assignment will familiarise you with the skills and knowledge required to plan and execute location sound recording for broadcast video.  During the process of completing this assessment, you will:

- Become familiar with the planning phase required for location sound recording.- Perform the task of location sound recording using an E.N.G. sound kit. Video will be shot using student smartphones.- Produce a final stereo sound mix to accompany the video.

You will work individually on this assignment. 


 Criteria for Assessment

Below is a checklist for how your submission of this assignment will be graded.

- Demonstration of effective communication with the assessor and the subject material.

- Observation of safe work procedures when on location - submission of SWMS.

- Demonstration of technical knowledge & operation of the E.N.G. sound kit.

- Demonstration of ability to produce a high-quality dialogue recording and final mix.

- Submission of the completed assignment on schedule.
