Course Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to construct thermoformed bases and appliances such as mouthguards, bleaching trays and orthodontic retainers.
This unit applies to work in dental technology.

Details of Learning Activities
Theory: knowledge material required to effectively complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the work role such as construct thermoformed bases and appliances such as mouthguards, bleaching trays and splints.
Practical: Dental Laboratory exercises/activities required to correctly interpret work orders and construct thermoformed appliances according to industry standards whilst following and maintaining effective WHS and infection control procedures.

Overview of Assessment
You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:
• read and correctly interpreted work orders and constructed the following 3 appliances:
- mouthguard
- bleaching tray
- splint
• used standard precautions and safe work practices to trim, polish and finish 2 thermo-formed appliances suitable for insertion in the mouth
• critically evaluated the 2 different types of thermo-formed appliances produced to meet technical laboratory and clinician requirements.
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.
Regular attendance is necessary.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.
To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Assessment Task 1: Knowledge Assessment
Due AT1: 10/09/23
The theory assessment will include short answer questions and diagrams as required.
Assessment Task 2: Practical Assessment
Due AT1: 07/09/23
During your practical assessment you will be required to correctly interpret work orders to construct and critically evaluate 3 thermoformed appliances according to technical laboratory and clinician requirements, whilst under exam conditions.
