Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty. The unit applies to all workers who may be required to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

Specific licensing /regulatory requirements relating to this competency, including requirements for refresher training should be obtained from the relevant national/state/territory Work Health and Safety Regulatory Authorities.

2.1 Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines

2.2 Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles

2.3 Display respectful behaviour towards casualty

2.4 Obtain consent from casualty where possible

2.5 Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible

2.6 Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer s instructions

2.7 Monitor the casualty s condition and respond in accordance with first aid principles

  • Practical clinical practice, peer evaluation/feedback session

Teaching Schedule

This unit is scheduled for delivery for full time students and apprentices as follows:

Full time students

Week 10 - First Aid & CPR Course, including Practical Assessments 1, 2 & 3

Week 12 - Online Quizzes are to be completed which includes Assessments 4, 5 & 6

Apprentices

Week 1 of Block 3 - First Aid & CPR Course, including Practical Assessments 1, 2 & 3

1 week post Block 3 - Online Quizzes are to be completed which includes Assessments 4, 5 & 6

 

Please note that the timetable is subject to change at the discretion of RMIT.  In this event, students will be notified via student email.

 

Students will attempt the practical assessments under supervision of the assessor and they will be granted either a CA (Competent) or NYC (Not Yet Competent) according to the assessment guidelines and criteria outlined in the HLTAID003 Assessment Overview.  In order to achieve a Competent result, a student must successfully complete all listed requirements of the assessment criteria.  Students will receive verbal feedback on this assessment on the day of the assessment.
