Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply basic infection prevention and control principles in work settings including implementing standard and transmission-based precautions and responding to risks.

Performance Criteria:

  • 1.1. Identify standards and guidelines relevant to own role and work setting.
  • 1.2. Identify infection risks and hazards associated with own role and work setting.
  • 1.3. Identify roles and responsibilities of self and others in relation to infection prevention and control.

3.1 Follow protocols for care after exposure to blood or other body fluids as required

3.4 Minimise contamination of materials, equipment and instruments by aerosols and splatter

3.5 Identify, separate and maintain clean and contaminated zones

Overview of Assessment

You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:

  • followed established organisation infection prevention and control procedures on at least 3 separate occasions
  • followed established organisation infection prevention and control procedures at least once for each of the following:
  • hand hygiene and care of hand
  • use of personal protective equipment
  • handling of waste
  • enforcing clean and contaminated zones
  • limitation of contamination
  • surface cleaning

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.   

Regular attendance is necessary. 

Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.


Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Diploma of Dental Technology qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.   

To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

AT1 Knowledge Assessment

This is an open-book assessment scheduled to be submitted (Phase 1/Day 5 after Session 3 ) via Canvas. This knowledge assessment will allow students to demonstrate the knowledge required for a dental assistant to the Infection Control which cannot be demonstrated within a clinical environment.  Knowledge assessment students will be asked to answer all questions that relate to Elements and performance criteria and Knowledge evidence of the HLTINF001 Comply with Infection prevention and control policies and procedures. There are some scenarios and safety requirements relevant to the workplace. Feedback will be provided via Grade Centre on Canvas and discussed verbally if required. 

 

AT2 Simulated Lab - Practical Assessment 2

This is a simulated practical assessment is conducted in Phase 1 at RMIT Level 3 . This practical workplace assessment has been designed to provide students with an opportunity to demonstrate their
ability to complete and follow relevant infection prevention and control procedures within the Simulated Clinic at RMIT. The assessment will mainly be focused on infection prevention and control in the dental laboratory, with a focus on PPE, Hand Hygiene, and setting up and setting down dental laboratory Feedback will be provided at the end of the practical assessment. 

 

AT3  - Thirdparty Report

This is a simulated practical assessment is issued online in Phase 1. This practical assessment task is the third of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit. This assessment will mainly be focused on infection prevention and control in the dental laboratory, with a focus on PPE, Hand Hygiene, setting up and setting down dental laboratory, under the direction/supervision of their supervisor . Feedback will be provided at the end of the assessment. 

 

AT4 -Worplace Vedio Practical

This is a simulated practical assessment is issued online in Phase 1. This practical assessment task is the final of four assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit. This assessment students demonstrates their skills and knowledge of infection prevention and control in the dental Lab, with a focus on PPE, Hand Hygiene, under the direction/supervision. Feedback will be provided via Grade Centre on Canvas and discussed verbally if required.
