Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and use emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the workplace.

The unit applies to individuals who are required to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources and who deal with unpredictable problems as part of their job role. These individuals may be responsible for leading a team or work area.

Develop emotional intelligence via feedback  

Apply EQ techniques to deal with work colleagues 

 

This week we analyse the topic of how to develop emotional intelligence via feedback. We analyse emotional triggers further and how to respond to the emotional state of others. 

We explore how to apply emotional intelligence techniques in the workplace with flexibility and adaptability. We consider how decision-making styles should factor in the feelings of others and describe behaviour that is inappropriate for a leader. 

We also discuss emotional intelligence in the workplace and the impact on teams. 

We also discuss how to build emotional intelligence culture with relevant stakeholders to seek opportunities to improve the workplace.

Overview of Assessment

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • demonstrate emotional intelligence in relation to at least two different work tasks
  • promote development of emotion intelligence in others on at least one occasion.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • develop assessment criteria to assess personal emotional strengths and weaknesses
  • conduct an analysis to identify personal emotional triggers, incorporating feedback from others
  • analyse and document interactions with co-workers
  • develop and implement plans for responding to emotional expressions
  • apply techniques that promote flexibility in interactions with others and show consideration for the emotions of others.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • application of emotional intelligence attributes, including:
  • self-awareness

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to challenges and situations to demonstrate the application of performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

There are a total of two (2) assessment tasks you need to complete for this unit. This is assessment task one (1) of two (2) that you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent in the unit. BSBPEF502 Develop and use Emotional Intelligence.

 

Completing this activity will allow you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to model workplace behaviours that demonstrate emotional management.

What

Context

This assessment task is based on a roleplay between a manager and a team-member which allows you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to model workplace behaviours that demonstrate emotional management. You will be provided class time to perform this task.

  • This assessment task involves you interacting with other team members to carry out the situations described in each scenario listed in this assessment.
  • You will also be provided with a set of emotional cards.
  • You will play the role of either a Manager or a Team Member to carry out the situation described.
  • During the role play, you will be required to answer three (3) sets of questions based on the emotional responses displayed by the team members and analysing your emotional response.
  • The assessor will observe the conversation and assess your knowledge and skills in applying the emotional

Where

Assessment can take place in your workplace, or in the simulated workplace as part of your sessions at RMIT by the assessor.

How

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.

 

Conditions for assessment

 

·       You will be observed undertaking this task by their assessor.

·       Each student will be assessed individually against all assessment criteria.

·       You must not copy the work of others. (For more information regarding Academic Integrity please refer to RMIT Academic Integrity Guidelines.)

·       The assessor will negotiate a suitable time and location for assessment at least one week prior to the assessment taking place.

·       You must complete the task within the maximum allowed duration.

·       This is an individual task which you must complete with minimal support from others (allowed support would be questions related to the location of equipment needed).

·       You must complete all the actions as listed in the observation checklist to the standard described in Section B to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment.

·       You will be assessed as satisfactory or not satisfactory.

·       You will have the opportunity to resubmit any assessment that is deemed Not Yet Satisfactory (one resubmit allowed)

·       In certain circumstances, students may be eligible for an assessment adjustment (e.g. a disability or long-term medical or mental health condition; an unavoidable employment, family, cultural, religious or elite sporting commitment known in advance; other unexpected circumstance outside your control).

·       Make prior arrangements with the instructor at least one week prior to the assessment due date if you require special allowance, allowable adjustment to this task or extension of time.

Summary and Purpose of Assessment

 There are a total of two (2) assessment tasks you need to complete. This is assessment task two (2) of two (2) that you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent in the unit BSBPEF502 Develop and use Emotional Intelligence.

By completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your skills and knowledge in evaluating your emotional intelligence and how you respond to workplace situations, including working collaboratively with team members and gather your feedback.

Assessment Instructions

What

This assessment task requires you to complete a series of activities which relate to emotional intelligence. There are also a series of questions relating to a range of workplace scenarios that you will be required to answer. You are to write full sentence descriptions except where they determine information can be conveyed more clearly using dot points or tables.

To complete this assessment, you are required to:

·       Download the Stingray Case Studies and Activities document from the Assignment link in the menu list on Canvas.

·       Refer to Activity 1 “Emotional Strengths and Weaknesses”.

·       Follow the instructions provided in this activity. You will use this to complete some of the tasks in this assessment.
