Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and use emotional intelligence to increase self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and relationship management in the workplace.

The unit applies to individuals who are required to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources and who deal with unpredictable problems as part of their job role. These individuals may be responsible for leading a team or work area.

A range of learning activities are planned for this course, including self-paced research and collaborative-based activities, The collaborative classroom-based activities will include group discussion, group problem-solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated business environment. Develop emotional intelligence via feedback  

Apply EQ techniques to deal with work colleagues 

 

This week we analyse the topic of how to develop emotional intelligence via feedback. We analyse emotional triggers further and how to respond to the emotional state of others. 

We explore how to apply emotional intelligence techniques in the workplace with flexibility and adaptability. We consider how decision-making styles should factor in the feelings of others and describe behaviour that is inappropriate for a leader. 

We also discuss emotional intelligence in the workplace and the impact on teams. 

We also discuss how to build emotional intelligence culture with relevant stakeholders to seek opportunities to improve the workplace.

Overview of Assessment

Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

  • demonstrate emotional intelligence in relation to at least two different work tasks
  • promote development of emotion intelligence in others on at least one occasion.

In the course of the above, the candidate must:

  • develop assessment criteria to assess personal emotional strengths and weaknesses
  • conduct an analysis to identify personal emotional triggers, incorporating feedback from others
  • analyse and document interactions with co-workers
  • develop and implement plans for responding to emotional expressions
  • apply techniques that promote flexibility in interactions with others and show consideration for the emotions of others.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

  • application of emotional intelligence attributes, including:
  • self-awareness
  • self-management
  • social awareness
  • relationship management
  • emotional intelligence principles and strategies
  • strategies for communicating with a diverse workforce that has varying expressions of emotion
  • methods to develop emotional intelligence in others
  • emotional intelligence in the context of building workplace relationships.

Assessment Conditions

Skills in this unit must be demonstrated in a workplace or simulated environment where the conditions are typical of those in a working environment in this industry.

This includes access to challenges and situations to demonstrate the application of performance evidence.

Assessors of this unit must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards.


Assessment Tasks

This unit requires you to complete two assessment tasks. You must satisfactorily complete all tasks to achieve competency for this unit. Refer to teaching schedule for assessment due dates.

Assessment Task Assessment Method Task Summary 

Assessment Task 1:

Emotional Intelligence Role Play

Role Play This assessment task is based on a roleplay between a manager and a team-member which allows you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge to model workplace behaviours that demonstrate emotional management.

Assessment Task 2:

Evaluate Emotional Intelligence

Project This assessment task requires you to complete a series of activities which relate to emotional intelligence. There are also a series of questions relating to a range of workplace scenarios that you will be required to answer. 

Resubmissions (VET Programs)

If you are found to be unsuccessful (Not Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory) in a Course Assessment Task, you will be allowed one resubmission. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to improve and set a new deadline for the resubmission.

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements, you must apply to your Program Manager in writing, outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team, and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

Penalties for Late Submission

Late submissions of assignments without special consideration or extension will automatically be considered a re-submission (see above).

Changes to the Assessment Scheme

Where a change to assessment approved by the dean/head of school changes an assessment due date, students will be given at least five working days' notice of the new due date.

You can expect to receive marks and feedback on in-course assessment work in time to improve your performance in related assessment tasks later in the course.
