Course Description

In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge required to access, interpret and apply relevant building codes and standards applicable to the National Construction Code (NCC) Classes 1 and 10 buildings, to a maximum of two storeys. This includes knowledge of the structure of the NCC, as well as the ability to access relevant information from the code as applicable to various building projects.

It applies to builders, site managers and related construction industry professionals responsible for ensuring compliance with building codes and standards related to residential construction projects.

Details of Learning Activities

You will learn the following:

1. Classify buildings

2. Determine construction compliance solutions within the NCC.

3. Apply fire protection requirements.

The total number of scheduled hours of teaching, learning and assessment involved in this course includes all planned activities (face to face classes, lectures, workshops and seminars; online learning and other forms of structured teaching and learning). It also covers the amount of effort necessary to undertake, evaluate and complete all assessment requirements, observation of work performance, discussions with supervisors and others providing third party evidence and one on one and group assessment sessions with students.

You will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Learning Hub and may be provided with additional materials in class. Lists of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. You will also use equipment and software packages in the laboratory for the project work. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.

This session will provide an introduction to the Building Codes & Standards cluster, and will outline how the cluster will be delivered and assessed over the semester. Students will be introduced to the NCC, provided a brief overview of the NCC and shown how to access and navigate the NCC, This session will focus on the purpose, structure and contents of the NCC, as well as the performance-based nature of the NCC, and what this means for compliance with the NCC

In this session students will learn about how to develop performance solutions.

Students will be guided through the process of developing a template performance solution report which they may utilise for AT3.

3)     Describe how assessments meet the assessment conditions

    • Assessment can be undertaken in the workplace or in a simulated workplace environment. 
    • A simulated environment is one that realistically replicates workplace conditions, materials and equipment, interactions with others and workplace irregularities, and which meets industry standards for safety and environmental practices.
    • Assessment is undertaken in a simulated workplace environment. Students are provided with construction plans, specifications and photographs throughout the construction process.
    • Students are able to interact with others in a simulated environment led by trainer facilitation.

Attendance Requirement - 85% for all students

Resubmission Policy: To pass this course, students must achieve a Satisfactory (S) result for all their Assessments (and parts of those assessments).

Students who do not achive a Satisfactory (S) result for their entire original submission for an Assessment will be provided with 1 (one) more submission opportunity (e.g. the resubmission) with a specific due date by their assessor. Students must achive a Satisfactory (S) result on their resubmission for that Assessment, by the due date given to them by their Assessor. 

Students who fail to submit their assessment by the due date will be issued a DNS (Did Not Submit) result which will not be overturned by teaching or managing staff. A DNS result will be overturned based on an approved Extention of Time or approved Special Consideration.
