Course Description

In this course, you will learn the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to communicate effectively with people, families and carers, and with other healthcare professionals, in healthcare settings.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 - Knowledge Assessment 

This is a short answer questions assessment task which allows you to demonstrate your knowledge required to apply effective communication skills with a person, family or carer and with other healthcare professionals in a variety of healthcare settings.

Assessment Task 2 - Practical Assessment 

Students will be required to participate in giving and receiving a clinical handover. They will be assessed on this by submitting their marked-up handover sheet and by submitting their notes from receiving handover from their fellow student. They will be assessed on giving peer feedback for the handover they received from their fellow student. Each student will then complete a self-reflection (online) in order to successfully complete this assessment and be deemed “satisfactory”.

Assessment Task 3 - Clinical Placement

Satisfactory completion of Clinical Placement (100% attendance i.e. all hours rostered for every day of allocated placement) forms part of the assessment for HLTENN036 Apply Communication Skills in Nursing Practice. If you do not attend 100% of your allocated placement and complete the clinical placement logbook, you will not achieve a Satisfactory result for this course.
