Course Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to conduct predictable and non-routine, varied communications, transactions and interactions in a designated language to meet the oral or signed language and communication needs of interpreting in general settings. It involves conversing with others, providing detailed information and advice, responding to unpredictable situations and conducting negotiations at a functional level.
This unit applies to those working as translators or interpreters in a range of general settings and contexts.

Details of Learning Activities
Learning activities may include discussion of common ethical, interpreting and translating topics, identifying key terminology for assignments, and conduct simulated preparation by building bilingual terminology. Students will be required to work with peers to share ideas and discuss ethical concerns.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.
Assessment tasks may include, but not limited to, the following:
-evidence demonstrating application of codes and standards
-demonstration of understanding and application of codes and standards in selected scenarios and simulated activities
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1 - Engage in discussions in English about ethical topics
This practical assessment task will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge and skills on: current and relevant standards of professional and ethical behaviour in general settings. The unit requires knowledge of the industry's professional codes of ethics and their application to practice and a designated language to conduct predictable and non-routine, varied communications, transactions and interactions, and to meet the oral language and communication needs of interpreting in general settings.
Assessment Task 2 - Ethics, Language Proficiency Questions
This knowledge assessment task is the last of two (2) tasks that you must complete satisfactorily to be deemed competent for this cluster. This assessment task will enable you to demonstrate your knowledge of communication needs of interpreting in general settings and current and relevant standards of professional and ethical behaviour when interpreting or translating in general settings and contexts.
Assessment Matrix
Each assessment clearly outlines the competencies being addressed in the task in relation to performance criteria. The sum of assessment tasks will cover all units and their elements over a range of occasions. You will be given opportunities to demonstrate competency in a variety of ways throughout the program. You are encouraged to discuss any problems or concerns with your teacher or program coordinator.
