Course Description

This unit defines the competency required to identify, select and correctly operate three desktop applications for a
range of purposes.

This unit encompasses the following three units:
• ICAU1129A Operate a word processing application
• ICAU1130A Operate a spreadsheet application
• ICAU1131A Operate a database application.


Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There may be benefit in concurrent learning with the following units:
• ICAU2005A Operate computer hardware
• ICAU2231A Use computer operating system. (or equivalent)

Learning Outcomes

Knowledge includes:
• OH&S principles and responsibilities
• basic understanding of system usage
• basic technical terminology in relation to reading help files and responding to system help prompts
• personal computer access and logon procedures.

Skills include:
• basic analysis of desktop layout, monitor and chair positioning, keyboard techniques and use of the mouse
• basic problem solving in application management and help function usage
• reading and writing at a level where basic workplace documents are understood
• clear and precise communication
• interpretation of user manuals


Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including written/oral activities and demonstration of practical skills to the relevant industry standards. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment activities to their teacher/assessor. Feedback will be provided throughout the course.

Evidence of student’s competence can be gathered through a variety of ways including:
• observation of processes and procedures;
• oral and/or written questioning on required knowledge and skills;
• testimony from supervisors, colleagues, clients and/or other appropriate
persons;
• inspection of the final product or outcome;
• a portfolio of documentary evidence.


Graded Assessment out of 100 Marks will be based on the results obtained for Assignments, Practical Reports & Unit Tests.
Students must gain a pass in ALL forms of assessment in order to gain this competency.
