Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

Analyse textile design influences is a year long course and so runs through Semesters 1 and 2. 

It is being delivered concurrently with the following courses;

In Semester 1: Analyse use of Colour in Textiles (VART 5905C), Assist in the the development of Textile Designs (VART 5904C) and Operate computing technology (6060C).

In Semester 2: Present and promote Textile Design Concepts (VART 5909C).

It is strongly recommended that Analyse textile design influences students are enrolled simultaneously in the courses listed above.

Course Description

Covers the skills and knowledge required to research and analyse various influences on textile design and production.
We will be looking at what influences textile design, from historical textiles and cultural influences to contemporary social trends, art, fashion, technology, and environmental change. The unit includes applied research and analysis of the design process, construction techniques, colour, textile products and future directions in textiles as well as the principles and elements of design.

Learning Outcomes

This course gives students the opportunity to undertake practical, oral and written assessment tasks to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to:

• analyse key influences in textile design
• identify the principles and elements of design
• gather information using a range of sources, tools and technology
• analyse and evaluate information
• analyse influences on textile production techniques
• relate findings to future directions in textile design
  

Details of Learning Activities

Weekly presentations on design influences are followed by workshop activities, industry related excursions and visits from relevant guest speakers. Students will keep a reference journal, participate in group discussions, undertake their own research into textile design influences and give an oral presentation of their findings to the group. Students will interview a contemporary designer of their choice, participate in detailed textile observation and analysis and undertake reflective writing. Future directions in textiles are explored and presented as a Techno Textiles Wiki. Principals and Elements underpinning design are explored in class exercises in this course and in linked courses. Colour wheel paint ups, practical problem solving and the creation of story and concept boards are also undertaken in linked courses VART 5905C and VART 5904C.

Session 1	Introduction to the course and its place in the design process. Explanation of assessment requirements. Presentation: Geometric Textile Design: Historical and Cultural context. Brainstorm Design influences. Discuss and define ‘Analysis’. Textile Observation Exercise.
Session 2	Introduction of  Research project and overview of past approaches. Avenues for Research: Research sources and methods - tips and requirements. Advanced Research Session with campus librarian. Task – Choose a historical, traditional, or cultural Design Influence.as a research topic.
Session 3	Design Principals and Elements: Application for Textiles Industry Visit
Session 4	Presentation: Colour in Textile Design: Colour’s significance as a signifier. Task– Research Project: Utilising the sources and approaches we have discussed in our last two weeks, source visual images and references for the major research project.	Research Project Consultations: * Individual Consultations regarding progress with research project. Students must confirm topic and discuss progress.
Session 5	Avenues for Research: Collections: Presentation of available collections, and examples of historical textiles as a design source for contemporary projects. Industry Visit
Session 6	Tribes: Material Identity. Textiles as signifiers of Cultural and Subcultural Identity. Exercise: Brainstorm Tribes and Sub-Cultures: Identify social and sub-cultural influences on textile design development and analyse their effects. Tribes Research excursion.
Session 7	Flower Power: Historical and Cultural context for Floral Textile Design. Identifying characteristics (nationality, lineage, status, religion, etc.) represented by Symbology of flowers. Analysis of floral design styles – historical – small/large scale, stylised, graphic, techno. Task– Research Project: Continue work sourcing visual images and references for the oral presentation and handout.	Research Project Consultations: * Show Evidence in Journal of planning and organisation, collection of resources and research undertaken.
Session 8	Australian Textile Origins: Indigenous Textiles, ancient and current. Discussion of cultural protocol and copyright. Industry Visit to view indigenous textiles.
Session 9	Textile History 101: Textiles of the ancient world. Task: Research events and innovations that shaped the world of textiles.	Colour Wheel work due for assessment in Colour and Design classes (to be co assessed for this subject).
Session 10	Textile History 2: Antiquity to the Industrial Revolution. Research project: Development of presentation and handout. * Individual Consultations regarding progress with research project.
Session 11	Textile History 3: Post Industrial Influences. Industry Visit
Session 12	World Textiles overview 1: Traditional textile design, techniques and processes, trade and exchange, products, purposes, uses and significance. Research project: Development of presentation and handout. * Individual Consultations regarding progress with research project.

Students will require a pencil, pen and their journal in all classes. A camera is often useful but not essential.

We will discuss the variety of other resources available to you for your projects in our avenues for research classes.

Overview of Assessment

To achieve successful completion of this course, students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner.
Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods throughout the year including: oral presentations, digital presentation files, preparation of a handout containing images, written synopsis and bibliography, development of a Wiki, Design principals and elements exercise, interview of a contemporary designer, concept and story boards, painted colour wheels and a journal containing planning, organisation and self directed research material.
Please note that some of these tasks and activities are undertaken in the linked courses mentioned under co-requisites and assessed in collaboration with staff delivering these courses.
Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher.

Students will be awarded a grade only if competency has been demonstrated within the standard enrolment period on the first assessment attempt. All work must be submitted by the due date. Late submission will not be graded higher than a PASS.
Units assessed as ‘not yet competent’ on a first assessment attempt and ‘competent’ on a second or subsequent attempt are to have results amended to competent but are not eligible for grading.
