Learning Outcomes
In this unit you will develop the required skills and knowledge as it applies to design development and presentation of a fashion range based on an occasion, theme or storyline. Design concept development processes will be conducted according to workplace practices and procedures.
Details of Learning Activities
This course is part of the DESIGNING FOR VIABILITY cluster.
This highly creative project has a strong focus on experimental design processes and students are guided on how to respond to a complex design brief. After browsing the many fashion competitions on offer, you choose and enter one. A catwalk creation is produced that is highly detailed and contains advanced construction processes. From this basis, a small range of commercial designs is developed to a conceptual stage. The mini range proposal is analyzed and modified for mass production.
Blended learning, consisting of classroom activities, self directed research and practical workshops.
Teaching Schedule
Week 1
Project Brief introduced, avenue for project researched and decided
(Decision made on competition to be entered and conditions and criteria of competition analyzed to ensure that it falls within the guidelines of the assignment brief)
• Preliminary concepts for both mini range and catwalk garment
• Target market identified for mini range
• Fashion trends identified
• Design Concepts (including purpose of design and user expectations )
• Additional expertise identified (if necessary)
Week 2
Continue with Project –initial ideas in story board form for range mini range are presented
• Fashion Range concepts target market for mini range identified
• Styles minimum of 12 garments for commercial range derived from catwalk garment, garments for mini range to be of commercial standard suitable for mass production.
• Source Fabrics Trims & accessories for both commercial range and catwalk garment begin testing process for suitability of all fabrication including any interlinings and linings
• Production Feasibility

Overview of Assessment
Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.
This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.
As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment is ongoing through observation and demonstration.
On completion of the Project, a portfolio of work is submitted. The portfolio contains several pieces of work:
1. Design Storyboards for both mini range and Catwalk garment. Competition Criteria for story boards must be meet, however in the case where the competition does not require story boards these must be produced in order to meet the assignment brief.
2. Patterns on Card with supporting toiles and notes relating to problem solving of design and construction aspects
3. A catwalk quality garment as a completed look that reflects the design brief of the competition this is to include acessories to complete the look.
4. A Business Viability study for the mini range. This must include research into the proposed host company for the mini range and a series of catalogue style diagrams in support of the mini range. Presented as a bound report this must include supporting documents including cost sheets and evidence of research into suitability of fabric and trims.
You are assessed on technical skills and knowledge as well as a host of relevant employability skills such as communication, teamwork, negotiation and the ability to project manage.
