Course Description
This unit covers skills and knowledge required to use commercial translation technologies designed to streamline and speed translation tasks and introduces students to common translation software and hardware in use such as Wordfast and TRADOS and scanners with OCR feature.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment will be ongoing during the semester, and you will receive feedback on your progress. You will undertake a variety of assessment tasks and activities to assess your level of competence against key elements and performance criteria.
Assessment tasks may include, but not limited to, the following:
- practical demostration in the computer laboratory of the use of translation technology
- translation memory built up during the study period
- translation assignments involving use of technology
- test/essay to evidence understanding of issues in computer translation and human translation
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Task 1: You will be given a Source Language translation passage and a translation of the same produced by a human translator. You will be asked to have the same Source Language passage translated by online machine translation software. You will be then be asked to write an essay comparing the HT and MT in terms accuracy, style, omissions, idiomatic language, grammatical structure in 500-1000- essay. You need to discuss also what you think of the use of MT, how much editing is required to be make it acceptable, benefits of MT etc.This task will be used for grading.
Assessment Task 2: You will be asked to translate a series of passages using wordfast translation software in the language lab during the semester. You will be asked to demonstrate your translation memory and how you build and access it. This task will be used for grading purposes. These passages can the same ones you use for translation practice or can be provided only for translation technology practice by the teacher.

Circumstances may arise which prevent students from completing an assessment task on time. In certain circumstances a student may be entitled to apply for an extension to the due date.
Extensions of 7 calendar days or less:
Students seeking an extension of 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) must complete and lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the School.
Extensions of greater than 7 working days:
Students seeking an extension of more than 7 calendar days (from the original due date) must lodge an Application for Special Consideration form under the provisions of the Special Consideration Policy , preferably prior to, but no later than 2 working days after the official due date.
