Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required of the dental hygienist to demonstrate clinical planning and practice in a contemporary dental clinic environment using critical thinking and analysis and reflective practice.

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Work with an understanding of dental ethics and moral codes of practice
1.2 Incorporate the theoretical concepts and information related to dental hygiene in practice
1.3 Identify contemporary issues in dental hygiene practice and examine their impact on patients and the health

1.4 Recognise the complementary roles of the dentist, dental specialist and other members of the dental team
1.5 Demonstrate a reflective and analytical approach to the management of the individual patient for preventive and therapeutic practices

6. Promote reflective practice of self and others

Performance Criteria:

6.1 Apply reflective practice within the dental hygiene role
6.2 Recognise the process and benefits of reflective practice in the management of dental patients
6.3 Reflect on issues that may require specialist intervention and/or review of management strategies
6.4 Evaluate the effectiveness of self reflection on self and others

Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension (see below) will not be corrected.

• APPLICATION FOR EXTENSION OF TIME FOR SUBMISSION OF ASSESSABLE WORK - A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original due date. They must lodge the application form (available at least 24 hours before the due date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on Level 3 of Dental Hospital. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for SPECIAL CONSIDERATION.

• For missed assessments such as exams- you (& your doctor if you are sick) must fill out a special consideration form. This form must be lodged online with supporting evidence prior to, or within, 48 hours of the scheduled time of examination
Note: The Pass mark for the exam is 60%. Assignments will be marked as Satisfactory/Not satisfactory.
Students may be given the opportunity to resubmit the assignment if this is requested by the teacher and approved by the co-ordinator.
Students are required to achieve a Pass grade in both the exam and assignments to achieve Competence for this course
