Course Description

This unit deals with the knowledge and skills required to initiate bleaching treatment for cosmetic purposes.

Element:	1. Preparation and presentation of the surgery
Performance Criteria:	1.1 All equipment, materials and instruments required for the selection of bleaching agents are gathered and arranged within the treatment cubicle 1.2 Review patient‟s case notes and approved treatment plan, and prepare to cater for any predetermined special needs of the patient 1.3 Bleaching agents are selected using evidence based criteria and according to relevant guidelines and manufacturer‟s recommendations to ensure patient‟s safety 1.4 Equipment and instruments are maintained according to relevant guidelines for instrument maintenance 1.5 All necessary safety precautions during the preparation and presentation stages have been followed
Element:	2. Prepare the patient for the application of bleaching agents
Performance Criteria:	2.1 Patient‟s medical history and records are reviewed to eliminate any contraindications to proposed application and to confirm treatment prescriptions 2.2 Patient‟s treatment plan, records and radiographs are reviewed to determine and confirm the prescription of bleaching agents 2.3 Customised stents that have been previously constructed are available for use if indicated 2.4 An explanation of the actions of the selected bleaching agent and/or devices, the application procedure, the potential side effects and the predicted outcome, is given to the patient. Adhering to the principles of informed consent, the patient is informed of possible negative outcomes resulting from any planned treatment. Consent is confirmed with the patient 2.5 The patient is given the opportunity to ask questions concerning any aspect of the proposed bleaching agent or device that is to be used and any concerns or issues are clarified 2.6 Periodontal debridement carried out on prior appointments is reviewed to confirm readiness for the initiation of bleaching 2.7 All extrinsic staining/discolouration on the patient‟s teeth is removed from smooth and fissured enamel surfaces 2.8 Stains/discolouration are reviewed after completion of periodontal debridement and stain removal, to confirm the need for bleaching, and any concerns at this stage are redirected to the dentist 2.9 All proposed treatment applications are carried out according to occupational health, safety and welfare guidelines and Infection control policy and procedures
Element:	3. Initiate prescribe bleaching treatment
Performance Criteria:	3.1 Application procedures ensure patient and operator safety and comfort 3.2 Apply prescribed agents and devices according to relevant guidelines and manufacturer‟s recommendations 3.3 Patient is given clear instructions on the home use of any recommended bleaching agent and/or device 3.4 Follow up care is planned to monitor patient progress, treatment outcomes and safe use

Assessment for this course forms part of the Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene).
Training is mapped to the Australian Dental Council June 2011 “Professional attributes and competencies of the newly qualified dental hygienist” and the Dental Board of Australia “Scope of Practice”.
Students must abide by the 2012 “ADA Guidelines for Infection Control Second Edition”, 2010 NHMRC “Australian Guidelines for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Healthcare” and Worksafe Victoria “Occupational Health and Safety Regulations 2007”.
Primary assessment involves on-going practical and applied assessment in a clinical workplace or simulated environment such as a supervised student clinic.
Assessment is typically based around written and/or online tests, assignments, reflective journals, evidence portfolio’s, logbooks and/or practical demonstrations.
Competency based training requires the student to be in attendance in order for assessment to be undertaken. Please refer to definition of Vocational Competency (http://www.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=xjog855ryrtq;STATUS=A;SECTION=3;PAGE_AUTHOR=Penny%20Mercer).
Assessment is undertaken through successful completion of all assessment activities and classroom, project & industry participation. Assessment will also be undertaken replicating workplace conditions (as far as possible), and where relevant undertaken in the clinical setting. Assessments are spaced across the duration of the course, in order for your teacher to provide you with progressive feedback.
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions, through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
