Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to run a business operation and covers the steps required to develop and implement a business plan.

Details of Learning Activities

 

A range of learning activities are planned for this course including self-paced and collaborative classroom based activities.

The collaborative classroom based activities will include group discussion, group problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated/real workplace environment.

You will be required to collect a portfolio of class activities either working as an Individual or in small groups, you will be required to do sections of a business plan activity relevant to the lecture and submit the responses by the end of the class. The activity is usually between 100 to 300 words long and there will be between 5 activities that need to be submitted. The activities will analyse and describe current or past business pan processes using concepts and tools as well as apply skills in finding information using online resources, books, and journals.

There will also be a oral test related to the course content covered from series of lectures and activities performed throughout the semester. It is to be completed by the student at a set time (8 minutes) on Week 11. During that time will need to answer 8 questions randomly from a pool of 22 questions. The test will cover students’ knowledge, skills in business concepts and strategic thinking. It will be tested based on lecture notes and activities covered during the semester.

We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.


Assessment Tasks

 

Assessment Task 1: Portfolio of class activities

Either working as an Individual or in small groups, you will be required to complete all sections of a business plan relevant to the lectures and in some cases submit the responses by the end of the class. The activity is usually between 200 to 300 words long  The activities will analyse and describe current or past business plan processes using concepts and tools as well as apply skills and knowledge in finding information using online resources, books, and journals.

Assessment Task 2: An oral test will be assessed on the competency achieved from answering the questions presented on the test. It is to be completed by the student at a set time (8 minutes) on Week 11. During that time the student will need to answer 8 questions randomly from a pool of 22 questions. The test will cover students’ knowledge, skills in business concepts and strategic thinking. It will be tested based on lecture notes and activities covered during the semester. 


The grade for this assessment task is worth 20% of your overall grade in this course.

Assessment 3 Major Assignment and Presentation– Business Plan Report

Student will be required to develop a business plan and write a report. Hand-outs and Blackboard activities will be provided with a set of instructions as to what is required and expected from the student’s for their assignment. It is an individual report covering what the student has learnt from meeting and discussing business plan. The report will be between 1800 to 2000 words. This will be followed by a five minute oral and visual presentation to the class
