Course Description

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to lead teams in the workplace and to actively engage with the management of the organisation.

It applies to individuals working at a managerial level who facilitate work teams and build a positive culture within their work teams. At this level, work will normally be carried out using complex and diverse methods and procedures requiring the exercise of considerable discretion and judgement, using a range of problem solving and decision making strategies.

This course involves two x 2 day workshops where information is shared through presentations and group discussions and activities where exercises are conducted to apply learning. Time is spent during classes and workshops for students to work towards group and individual assessment tasks.

This course is delivered and assessed in a cluster with Lead the work team (CHCMGT003).

The assessment tasks are as follows:

Assessment 1:  short answer knowledge questions 

Assessment 2:case study (There are three parts to this assessment task)

Part A:  Mission statement and development of key performance indicators

Part B:  Develop action plan using leadership and team roles to encourage consensus in developing the policies, processes and procedures to achieve organisational goals.

Part C:  Develop a dispute management process or strategy to address any issues relating to work performance in completing the action plan determined above.

 Assessment task 3:  short answer knowledge questions 

Assessment task 4: case study (There are four parts to this assessment task)

Part A:   Establish staffing and resourcing for work performance plans

Part B:   Develop a process for recruitment, induction, training and ongoing performance evaluation of staff 

Part C:   Provide recordings, scripts or minutes of the following three events:

  • a team meeting facilitation,
  • conflict resolution meeting and
  • a coaching session with a staff member.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment 1:  Workshop 1 short answer knowledge questions

For this assessment task you will need to complete ten short answers questions relating to leadership styles, team dynamics, organisational goals and how to determine and achieve these, how to foster staff consensus, how to deal with staff conflict.  Responses for each individual question should be no more than 250 words in length. 

Assessment 2: Workshop 1 case study

For this assessment task you will need to provide a written report which demonstrates the development and implementation of an action plan to achieve a key performance indicator that aligns to the greater organisational goals. 

 The report is to illustrate the leadership skills required to ensure appropriate team roles and responsibilities are utilised in achieving organisational roles.  Overall key performance indicators need to be determined and an action plan established to achieve these to demonstrate how team consensus and instances of conflict have been addressed.  The task has the following parts.

Part A:  Mission statement and development of key performance indicators.

Part B:  Develop action plan using leadership and team roles to encourage consensus in developing the policies, processes and procedures to achieve organisational goals.

Part C:  Develop a dispute management process or strategy to address any issues relating to work performance in completing the action plan determined above.

 

Assessment 3:  Workshop 2 short answer knowledge questions

For this assessment task you will need to complete ten short answers questions relating to the staffing planning processes, staff recruitment, induction, training, coaching and mentoring, group facilitation, performance management processes, best practice human resources management processes and referral networks.

 

Assessment 4:  Workshop 2 case study

For this assessment task you will need to provide a written report containing the staff resourcing plan, recruitment, induction and evaluation of a new employee; three scripts (and/or recordings) which demonstrate the facilitation of meetings to  delegate work, develop and evaluate work performance and addressing a dispute; and a final presentation that outlines the overall mission of the organisation, work action plan to achieve the goal, issues resolved and those that remain unresolved and a final summary of reflective work practices to demonstrate ongoing personal development and alignment with organisational goals.

 The report is to illustrate the leadership skills required to ensure appropriate team roles and responsibilities are utilised in achieving organisational roles together with policies and procedures that demonstrate how team consensus and instances of conflict are addressed.  The task comprises three parts

 Part A:   Establish staffing and resourcing for work performance plans using the templates provided.

Part B:   Develop a process for recruitment, induction, training and ongoing performance evaluation of staff using the templates provided.

Part C:   Provide recordings, scripts or minutes of the following three following events:

  • a team meeting facilitation,
  • conflict resolution meeting and
  • a coaching session with a staff member.

 

Part d: Capstone presentation task

For this assessment task you are required to develop an all staff communication and stake-holders dashboard presentation including dashboard (summary) information for your team, line managers and management, overall mission and organisational goals, the key performance indicators that have been agreed with staff and the achievement (or not) of team key performance indicators.  Outline any changes to goals and include current staffing levels (losses and additions). In the presentation include any concerns that have been raised regarding the goals or key performance indicators together with any highlights of individual or team achievement.  Conclude your presentation with anticipated future individual, team and/or organisational goals and a final summary of reflective work practice to demonstrate your ongoing professional development and alignment with organisational goals (ie. acquirement of knowledge, ongoing training, and affiliation with sector groups etc.).
