Overview of Assessment

Performance Evidence

Evidence of the ability to:

  • conduct research on a complex range of design issues, trends and ideas
  • document the analysis, critique and synthesis of complex sources to develop own positions and ideas
  • use opportunities to refine own design skills.

Knowledge Evidence

To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:

  • describe broad global design trends that apply to all design disciplines
  • discuss the business implications/consequences of adopting trends and emergent technologies
  • compare and contrast different research methodologies and options
  • outline sources of information on global design, design trends and broader references that may inform emerging and innovative design practice
  • critique specific current and emerging design technologies and trends (at a global level) in at least one area of design.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the design process field of work and include access to a current and varied range of familiar and unfamiliar information sources.

Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.

You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Feedback

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions.  You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.

You should take note of all feedback received and use this information to improve your learning outcomes and final performance in the course.

Assessment Tasks

ASSIGNMENT 1 – To create a video campaign based on your group journey from research to solution.

This is a group project.

What:

This assignment comes in three parts:-

Research - This will be a predominant part of your group project for the entire semester. You will need to research based on the given generic topic. You have learnt how to find research through secondary research such as articles, blogs, journals. This method is handy when you need to approve your assumption. However, there are times when you aren't able to find these findings when the situation or topic is unique.

You will need to research the given topic (scope) individually within your group. As a group, you will need to begin brainstorming broad topics and issues within the scope. The topic has to be linked to each other.

By week 6, as a group, you will need to submit your research that contains individuals journey using different methodologies including methods that you have learnt in a digital A3 portfolio. This submission is not a final mark. It is a review (pit-stop) which would indicate your current group performance.

Testing/research - As a creative investigator you will need to investigate your research whether they are valid. To validate this, you will need to create participatory design testing (Primary Research). Participatory design is a variety of primary research methodologies that would involve participants in the research and design stage. These are the following methodologies:-

Semantic differential
Quick and dirty prototyping
Bodystorming
Card sorting
Artefact analysis
Role-playing
Five Whys
Collage
Cultural probes
And many more.

You will use your peers as your participants to contribute to your design test.

By week 10, as a group, you will need to submit your findings containing your participatory design results. This submission is not a final mark. It is a review (pit-stop) which would indicate your current group performance.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solution - This will be the final part of your task for the semester, you will need to create a design solution or idea proposal based on your research. This solution will have to be campaign/awareness video. You will need to think whether it would be about awareness, education or conceptual product/service specific for a target audience and market.

This video should be about a storytelling. It will need to include your group research from the beginning of the semester, the outcome of your participatory design leading to creating a solution. Therefore, you will need to showcase your proposal video to prove that you have evaluated and test your idea before building a solution.

The video should be around 10 minutes (minimum) to 12 minutes (maximum)

By week 16, as a group you will need to submit your video proposal. This will be the final mark.

You can further look into a book called Universal Methods of Design: 100 Ways to Research Complex Problems, Develop Innovative Ideas, and Design Effective Solutions by Martin, Bella, Hanington, Bruce M.

How

Submission Instruction

For Research

The group will need to collate a digital A3 booklet that has break down of individual team member research.
See Assignment 1 template

Make sure to upload your digital group file as PDF format only into CANVAS. Any videos and websites should be linked and embedded within the file.

Criterias to succeed in completing this assignment

You will need to be able to demonstrate different range of research and methodologies.
You will need to be able to analyse and reflect on how your research could relate to your group topic.
You will need to be able to evaluate the credibility of information gathered.

For Testing/research

This can be a collection of images of your individual finding with an A4 size (250 - 400 words) analysis. Collate them as a group.

Make sure to upload your digital group file as PDF format only into CANVAS. Any videos and websites should be linked and embedded within the file.

Criterias to succeed in completing this assignment

You will need to be able to analyse and reflect on how your research could relate to your group topic.
You will need to be able to evaluate the credibility of information gathered.
You will need to be able to explain the reasoning behind your research and reflect these information to extend own perspectives.

For Video

  1. Create 10 minutes (minimum) to 12 minutes (maximum) video, what you are proposing.
  2. Utilise your research Primary and Secondary research as your key facts to justify why you are creating this campaign.
  3. Think of a name of your campaign and slogan.
  4. The video should be creative as marketing students, you are trying to engage and attract people to watch this video. It should be visually appetising but INFORMATIVE, CLEAR and CONCISE so think about the title of the product/service/idea, sound/music, graphics and colour that you will be creating.

You are expected to act as a team.

Criteria to succeed in completing this assignment

  • You will need to be able to demonstrate a critical analysis to identify creative or commercial opportunities presented by emerging trends and technologies
  • You will need to be able to identify and respond to future opportunities
  • You will need to be able to evaluate the credibility of information gathered.
  • You will need to be able to proactively identify and use opportunities presented by research to extend own design skills
  • You will need to be able to explain the reasoning behind your research and reflect these information to extend own perspectives.

ASSIGNMENT 2 – Visual Diary

This is an Individual assignment.

What:

To document what you have collated, analysed, designed and self-reflect on weekly basis of what you have discovered based on predominantly your individual primary and secondary research from the broad topic relating to Assignment 1. You will need to collate your work in a visual diary that you preferred to carry around. This book should be what a detective would have with him/her to inspect, explore, and research.

Your visual diary should be about who you are. Be creative on how you would like to present this book. Documentation such as research findings should be cut and paste into the book. Photography that you took and discovered as primary research should be printed and paste into the book. It should contain research methodologies that you have used to further analyse your findings.

Your visual diary should be either in A5 such as Moleskin booklet. Your visual diary should have weekly content of what you have explored and discovered. It should be a scrapbook so it can be messy but legible and understandable. Having a title such as Week 1, Week 2, etc is a must to keep things on track.
