Overview of Assessment
Performance Evidence
Evidence of the ability to:
- conduct research on a complex range of design issues, trends and ideas
- document the analysis, critique and synthesis of complex sources to develop own positions and ideas
- use opportunities to refine own design skills.
Knowledge Evidence
To complete the unit requirements safely and effectively, the individual must:
- describe broad global design trends that apply to all design disciplines
- discuss the business implications/consequences of adopting trends and emergent technologies
- compare and contrast different research methodologies and options
- outline sources of information on global design, design trends and broader references that may inform emerging and innovative design practice
- critique specific current and emerging design technologies and trends (at a global level) in at least one area of design.
Assessment Conditions
Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the design process field of work and include access to a current and varied range of familiar and unfamiliar information sources.
Assessors must satisfy NVR/AQTF assessor requirements.
You are advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate your assessment work to your teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
Feedback
Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or online discussions. You are encouraged to ask and answer questions during class time and online sessions so that you can obtain feedback on your understanding of the concepts and issues being discussed. Finally, you can email or arrange an appointment with your teacher to gain more feedback on your progress.
You should take note of all feedback received and use this information to improve your learning outcomes and final performance in the course.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment 1 - Journey Map
Instructions
You are required to visualise the information you have gathered over the pass 3 weeks and create a dynamic
A3 portrait poster that presents your discoveries and insights to us.
Part A: Fork in the Road
Students are required to demonstrate their understanding of the principles and methods of design thinking, by creating an A3 poster. Students must read the article, The future of design: When you come to a fork in the road, take it https://www.jnd.org/dn.mss/the_future_of_design.html and reflect on to the following questions, in their poster design: A minimum of 500 words is required.
- Which fork in the road would you take – craft or future? Why?
- What is the intent of design thinking?
- What are the key principles and methods used in this field of practice?
Part B: The Journey
Week 1
What did you learn in week 1 class exercise - show us!
Visualise 3 key things you learnt.
Week 2
What did you learn in week 2 class exercise - show us!
Visualise 3 key things you learnt, plus
present 3 design thinking research tools you find interesting, tell us what the tool is,
why it is used, and how would you foresee this being applied when creating a communication strategy?
Week 3
What did you learn in week 2 class exercise - show us!
Visualise 3 key things you learnt, plus
present 3 project case studies you have been inspired by.
Use visual examples of this and respond to the following questions.
What is the project title?
What is the project challenge.
What is the project outcome?

Assessment 2
Nike Grind Challenge + Individual Reflection
The design project challenge will be delivered in this final assessment, where students will be exploring the Double Diamond (DD) methods, both in theory and practice.
For this assessment, students will work in teams of up to 4 members as they explore the four stages of the DD method – Discover, Define, Develop and Deliver. Students are encouraged to apply their increasing knowledge of design thinking methods, with the intention they explore ways to deliver a unique and innovative solution.
What
1. Nike Grind Presentation – Group - 8 minute group presentation.
Your final submission will be a professional team presentation sharing with us your teams entire DD Journey.
It must present the following.
- Discover - An introduction to you chosen area of inquiry.
- Define - Your projects brief, the what, the who and the why.
- Develop – Show us your ideas, prototypes, sketches and mood boards. We need to see how far you have pushed your concept. A minimum of 5 examples of your development stage must be presented.
-
Deliver – Show us your final idea! Create an artist impression of your concept, plus a user journey map
2. Reflection – Individual – 500 word minimum
Each team member is required to write an individual reflection, to critically reflect on their process and outcomes throughout the project.
The following questions must be addressed
- Describe design thinking – what is it?
-
How is this relevant to your own practice? Where would you foresee using design thinking principles in your career?
- What are the key moments of insight you have gained in the project? Here you can refer to particular activities, readings or collaboration.
