Course Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate and modify the try-in fitting of a removable dental prosthesis prior to its completion for dentate or edentulous patients.
This unit applies to work in dental prosthetics.

Overview of Assessment
You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have completed the following tasks:
• performed the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment
• followed procedures to ensure patient safety during procedures
• customised the form of the registration rims prior to recording the jaw relationships and occlusions for at least 4 different patients including:
- 2 complete maxillary and mandibular dentures
- and any 4 dentures of the following, 2 of which must be partial dentures:
- complete maxillary or mandibular denture opposing partial maxillary or mandibular denture
- opposing partial maxillary and mandibular dentures
- partial maxillary or mandibular denture opposing natural dentition
• established and recorded jaw relationships and occlusion for 4 different patients
• selected appropriate shade and mould for artificial teeth for 4 different patients.
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.
Regular attendance is necessary. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.

Assessment Task 1 : Knowledge Assessment
For this assessment you need to show your knowledge required to evaluate and modify the try-in fitting of a removable dental prosthesis prior to its completion for dentate or/& edentulous patients.
This Knowledge assessment task needs to be completed satisfactorily, to be deemed competent for this unit.
You must answer all questions correctly to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment.
You will receive feedback at the conclusion of this assessment Task.
Assessment Task 2 : Practical Assessment
This is a Practical Assessment that will allow you to perform the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during the period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment, as evidenced by your clinical log book.
This Assessment is to show your skills and knowledge required to evaluate and modify the try-in fitting of a removable dental prosthesis prior to its completion for at least 4 different patients with requirements:-
2 patients for complete Mx & Md trial dentures and 2 patients for partial dentures.(Full details in Assessment Task Instructions).
Feed back will be given after completion of each patient Try-in.
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.
To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. specified by the unit of competency You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
You will be advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Observation of You performing work is used to confirm competency.

* There are additional assessment requirements over and above those of the training package within this course to meet RMIT’s accreditation with the Australian Dental Council (ADC). This will ensure that, upon successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics, students are eligible to apply for AHPRA registration. This will include assessment by an approved external assessor, who has been approved by the Australian Dental Council.
