Course Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to insert, alter and issue a completed removable dental prosthesis for dentate and edentulous patients.
This unit applies to work in dental prosthetics.

Overview of Assessment
You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have completed the following tasks:
• performed the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment
• followed procedures to ensure the safety of 4 patients during preparation, insertion and removal of completed prosthesis
• assessed the functional and aesthetic acceptability for at least 4 patients including:
- 2 complete maxillary and mandibular dentures
- and any 4 dentures of the following, 2 of which must be partial dentures:
- complete maxillary or mandibular denture opposing partial maxillary or mandibular denture
- opposing partial maxillary and mandibular dentures
- partial maxillary or mandibular denture opposing natural dentition
• assessed the functional and aesthetic acceptability for at least 1 patient for one of the following:
- relines or rebases
- repairs and/or additions to existing dentures.
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.
Regular attendance is necessary. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.
Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Knowledge Assessment
This assessment allows you to demonstrate they have the knowledge required to insert, alter and issue a
completed removable dental prosthesis for dentate and edentulous patients.
To be deemed competent for this assessment Task, you are to answer all 16 questions which relate to a range of workplace scenarios regarding this unit.
Assessment Task 2: Practical Assessment
This assessment allows you to demonstrate that you have the skills and knowledge required to insert, alter and issue a completed removable dental prosthesis for dentate and edentulous patients.
You are to complete 2 'full Mx & Md Dentures for 2 patients and 2 partial dentures for 2 patients and 1 patient for either a reline, repair or addition denture.
You must present your Log book to your assessor before assessment begins for each patient 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, as proof of least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace.
You must complete all the actions as listed in the observation checklist to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment.
There are additional assessment requirements over and above those of the Training Package within this course to meet RMIT's accreditation with the Australian Dental Council (ADC). This will ensure that, upon successful completion of the Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics, students are eligible to apply for AHPRA registration. Students' final assessments will include assessment by an external ADC approved assessor.
Competency requirements and Grading:
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.
You will be advised that you are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Observation of You performing work is used to confirm competency.
