Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to adjust and maintain new and existing dental prostheses for dentate and edentulous patients.

This unit applies to work in dental prosthetics.

Overview of Assessment

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency, the underpinning knowledge and the skills application. Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of the competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

 

Assessment

Undertake Clinical placement and skills evidence record – observation checklist (4 patients – 2 x partial, 2 x full)

Develop a Reflective journal / Photographic portfolio

Assignment – you are to develop practice manual focusing on communication plan and checklist

 

In order to meet the requirements of the Australian Dental Council (ADC) accreditation of this program, students are required to undertake an assessment by external assessors.

You will not be given an opportunity to undertake this assessment until you have been deemed satisfactory in clinical competencies by your clinical demonstrators. 

The proposed assessment date is outlined below, assessment dates will be based upon availability of patients (clients) within the Royal Dental Hospital Melbourne.

 

The assessment will be undertaken in two parts;

  1. November 3, 2017- Case presentations to a panel of external assessors (using 1 - F/F case and 1 - Partial denture case that have been deemed as assessment cases, with noguidance from anyone else, throughout all stages of the treatment), you will present the treatment that you undertook for the clients and respond to questions from the panel. The presentation must include a full case history as well as photographic evidence of the treatment.
  2. November 10, 2017 - External assessors will assess the work undertaken in the clinical environment at the check visit, you may be asked into the clinical booth at the time to discuss the treatment. This will be at the discretion of the assessors.

Throughout both aspects of this assessment, you will be assessed against the Professional Competencies of the Newly Qualified Dental Prosthetist as outlined in your clinical logbook and on the following website:

To be deemed competent (CA) - a Satisfactory (S) result in all aspects of this assessment by the external assessors is required.

If you are deemed Not Satisfactory (NS) in any aspect of this assessment, your result will be taken to the course advisory committee (CAC) for discussion.

If you receive a final grade of Not Yet Competent (NYC), you will be required to enrol in this unit again and incur the fees associated.

Turnitin

Turnitin is an online text-matching service which can be used to support academic integrity and address plagiarism. All submissions via Turnitin within Blackboard include the relevant wording for the e-Submission authorisation process. You are to use Turnitin. To verify that the work submitted is their own work and referenced accordingly. This software will be used by all staff to ensure original work by You is checked at submission of the assessment.

If you require an Extension of Submittable Work (assignments, reports or project work etc.) for 7 calendar days or less (from the original due date) and have valid reasons, you must complete and

Lodge an Application for Extension of Submittable Work (7 Calendar Days or less) form and lodge it with the Senior Educator/ Program Manager.

The application must be lodged no later than one working day before the official due date. You will be notified within no more than 2 working days of the date of lodgement as to whether the extension has been granted.
