Course Description

This unit applies to work in dental prosthetics where the dental prosthetist must enter into a structured professional relationship with a dentist as defined by the Dental Board of Australia before providing such treatment. 

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to construct and place an aesthetic, and functional implant retained overdenture.

1.1 Ensure a structured professional relationship with a dentist is established

1.2 Obtain accurate, complete and legal records of the patient’s personal, medical and dental history

1.3 Provide details of the procedure to the patient or carer and obtain and document consent following ethical and legal requirements

1.4 Make accessible in the clean zone of the surgery the patient’s required laboratory work and necessary charts and records

1.5 Ensure emergency procedures are in place and ready for use according to relevant guidelines

2.2 Apply standard precautions to take primary impressions of the maxilla and/or mandible using an impression material in stock edentulous trays

Details of Learning Activities

You will be required to complete 2 Implant retained overdentures for this unit utilizing two different types of implant systems.

 

You will need to demonstrate the following for 2 patients while being observed by an assessor

 

Construct a new set of conventional dentures for two patients

 

For the two patients you must:

 

1: Plan Treatment

2 Take a primary impression

3:Pour working model

4:Construct edentulous special tray

5:Take final impression

6: Pour master/working models and fabricate occlusal rims

7: record jaw relationships and occlusion

8: fit and evaluate try in prosthesis

9: Process, evaluate and insert the completed prosthesis

10: Construct surgical guide/stent  

 

Note: Due to the low availability of implant patients for this part of the procedure you will use a simulated model as your patient, although real dental clinic and laboratory conditions will be used along with real people presenting as supervisors and practitioners.

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through CANVAS. 

CANVAS is an online resource with the lesson plans for each unit. Within CANVAS are the session lessons plans, assessments, resources and other materials required for completion of each unit of competency. 

Additional materials maybe provided in class and lists of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.


Overview of Assessment

You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:

• performed the activities outlined in the performance criteria of this unit during a period of at least 240 hours of work in a clinical dental workplace environment

• prepared 2 patients for insertion of an implant retained overdenture

• followed procedures to ensure patient safety during try-in and insertion

• constructed 2 functional and aesthetic implant retained overdentures.

To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.   Regular attendance is necessary.  Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.

Assessment 1 - Knowledge

Assessment 2 - Practical 

The following assessment tasks are to be completed for 2 implant retained overdentures

1:For the two patients the student must construct a new set or conventional dentures:

a: Plan Treatment

b:Take a primary impression

c: Pour master/working models and fabricate occlusal rims

d: Record jaw relationships and occlusion

e: Fit and evaluate try in prosthesis

f: Process, evaluate and insert the completed prosthesis

g: Construct surgical stent/guide 

2:The students existing 2 patients from Task 1 have decided they are not satisfied with the retention and stability of the conventional dentures. They are to construct a new set of removable implant retained overdentures

Note: Due to the low availability of implant patients for this part of the procedure the student must use a simulated model as their patient, although real dental clinic and laboratory conditions will be used along with real people presenting as supervisors and practitioners.
