Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to work effectively in a health setting with patients, clients, staff, visitors, suppliers and others to meet established work requirements.

Learning Outcomes



1.1 Follow ethical guidelines in decision-making in all work undertaken the health setting with awareness of potential ethical complexity in own work role
1.2 Reflect understanding and compliance with the principles of duty of care and legal responsibilities in all work undertaken
1.3 Refer any breach or non adherence to standard procedures or adverse event to appropriate personnel

Block 1 day 4: Morning Session:

  • Facilitator led Study and Learning online (including time management and LLN) via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion.
  • Facilitator led IT Induction via Power Point presentation and computer based activity.
  • Facilitator led Legal and Ethical (including Workplace Ethics and Legal Issues and Maintain professional work practices) via Power Point presentation and classroom discussion.

Block 1 day 4: Afternoon Session:

Facilitator led Communicating and working in the dental surgery via Power Point Presentation, classroom discussion, small group activity and role play.
topics include:

  • Communicate effectively (Discussion of Power Point Presentation on communicate and work effectively in a health setting). Students complete quiz and  then are placed in groups and are given workplace scenarios from which they are to role-plays (using positive and effective communication skills).
  • Practice high standards of personal hygiene (Power Point Presentation and discussion on practice high standards of personal hygiene. Students in small groups are to create a poster on high standards of personal hgyiene.
  • Promote a positive approach to health (Power Point Presentation and discussion on promoting a positive approach to health for clients and colleagues).  Students in small groups create small posters on emergency procedures that are relevant to the dental industry and in small groups roleplay various dental health situations.
  • Video on "Conflict management" and class discussion post video.
  • Work effectively within the health care system (Power Point Presentation and discussion on working effectively within the health care system, including the dental team, the dental industry (private and public dentistry), and the current dental health issues. Students are to create a hierarchy chart of the practice they work in and class discussion on the different types of hierarchy charts and an overall discussion of the dental industry.
  • Reflection of class

Experience in the workplace in the students workplace.

Block 4 day 4:

Participation in Block 4 day 4, Students gain information of communicating and working as an efficient dental assistant with patients who are medically compromised during the oral presentations.

Overview of Assessment

A variety of assessments are incorporated in this unit of competency including:
• Observation in the work place
• Evidence of essential knowledge and understanding may be provided by: traditional or on line (computer-based) assessment or written assignments/projects
• Case study and scenario as a basis for discussion of issues and strategies to contribute to best practice
• Questioning
• Staff and/or client feedback
• Supporting statement of supervisor
• Authenticated evidence of relevant work experience and/or formal/informal learning
• Role play simulation


Assessment Tasks

Please Note:

Students may apply for, Special Consideration (as per information provided in the Student Handbook) via the RMIT Hub http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/specialconsideration where they believe factors beyond their control have affected their academic performance. Special consideration must be lodged prior to or within 48 hours of the scheduled assessment time or assessment submission date. Special consideration is not granted automatically on application.

Application for extension of time for submission of work (where the assessment tasks will be submitted within seven days)

  • Complete the Legal and Ethical written assessment  
    Complete Portfolio and Oral presentation, (written report and oral presentation of a medically compromised patient) with a fully completed and signed HLTHIR301A cover sheet must be submitted with the written assessment. Refer to the Student Handbook for RMIT policies and protocol for submission of task.  Third party evidence completed by the student and workplace supervisor indicating the clinical experience that has occurred and workplace supervisor to record relevant comments about their observation of the student is included in the written assessment
  • Complete the Professional Development assessment (including a Professional development plan which needs to be signed by Workplace supervisor, Student is required to write cover letter in response to job vacancy and Current CV)

A NYC (Not Yet Competent) result for the three written assessments is managed as follows-
The marked coversheet will provide the student on what questions to resubmit. The student will have two weeks to submit the resubmission from the date of receiving the resubmission. The student will submit the original marked assessment (including original marked coversheet) and the resubmission answers that have been researched. The student with a resubmission is strongly advised to contact the principal teacher to clarify any aspects of the resubmission or arrange for a private tutorial.
Please note: Failure to undertake the above mentioned to achieve a PX result for the three assessments may result in a student being deemed NYC and requiring result in re-enrolment incurring fees.
