Course Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance

Details of Learning Activities
Teacher Lead Activities:
Classroom based tutorial power point presentation and practical instruction together with the use of computers and relevant software/s.
Practical simulations and demonstrations. Use of manikin for CPR demonstration

Student Centred Activities:
Self managed research is required by the student to gain the necessary underpinning knowledge for demonstration of competency in this unit.
This research is to be undertaken by the student between block one and block two attendance at RMIT ( as per students timetable) A Learning Guide is provided to assist the student in their learning.
It is recommended that the learner uses the prescribed text listed below to support their learning. The teaching schedule is based on the prescribed text.
Participation in group activities based on simulated workplace exercises
Completion of CPR practical assessment and written incident report based on scenario provided by teacher
Completion of written assessment - 80% pass mark.
Teaching Schedule
Please Note: This unit covers HLTFA301C Apply First Aid incorporating HLTCPR201B Perform CPR. The unit delivery also contains detailed information contextualised to the delivery of first aid for dental emergencies.
Block 1, day 5 = 6-hrs
Teacher lead class room discussion using power point presentation & practical demonstration
- Basic Life Support (BLS), D.R.S.A.B.C.D, CPR/infant, child & adult application & ratio. Lateral recovery position , A.E.D. when to use and when not to use, moving a casualty - ALL of these are demonstrated by the teacher using class participant or manikin
- Medical emergencies, including diabetes, cardiac arrest, head injury, shock, seizure, syncope, hyperventilation, hypoglycaemia, asthma, stroke, hypothermia & hyperthermia, substance overdose
- Trauma managementincluding bleeding, burns, embedded objects, sprains, fractures, dental trauma, poisoning, envenomation.
- Legal aspects of first aidincluding consent, negligence, "good samaritan act", recording & documentation of an incident, workplace first aider legal responsibilities.
- Small group learning activities on lateral recovery position, D.R.S.AB.C & CPR
Small group activities of basic bandaging techniques for wounds,bleeding
Student centered self managed research between block 1 & block 2 attendance :9hrs
The student is to complete the learners workbook between Block 1/Session 1 and Block 2/Session 2. The completed workbook must be submitted for assessment 3 weeks prior to block 2 attendance as a pre requisite for undertaking the written assessment on day 5, block 2

It is recommended that the learner uses the prescribed text listed below to support their learning. The student should focus on being able to recognize when to carry out BLS and how to provide emergency assistance to a casualty.

Overview of Assessment
A multi choice assessment theory paper will be completed in block two.
Followed by a practical demonstration of competency in the application of the Basic Life Support Flow Chart.
The student is required to successfully complete the multi choice assessment before they will be eligible to participate in the practical first aid class.
The practical assessment includes demonstration of CPR on a manikin; demonstration of assessment principles and first aid care on a fellow student. These assessments are workplace based scenarios.
Assessment Tasks
PLEASE NOTE: The HLTFA301C Apply First Aid Certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of achieving competence, however The student MUST UPDATE THE HLTCPR201B Perform CPR qualification every 12 MONTHS to maintain currency in HLTFA301C Apply First Aid
1. CPR Practical Assessment including completion of scenario based written incident report
2. Written Assessment (multiple choice) - 80% pass mark
Prerequisite for CPR practical assessment as follows:
- Attendance to class work on day 5, block 1
Prerequisite for written assessment as follows:
- Completion of the CPR practical assessment with a CA result
- The submission of the fully completed HLTFA301B Apply First Aid Learning Guide by the due date for submission is a prerequisite for written assessment on day 5, block 2.

1. Day 5, block 1 - CPR Practical assessment including completion of written incident report based on scenario provided by teacher.
Student is required to demonstrate competence in D.R.S.A.B.C as per the HLTCPR201B Perform CPR Performance Criteria/Learning Outcomes which incorporates unit HLTFA301C Apply First Aid and as per the ARC Resuscitation Guidelines. Student MUST complete 2 minutes of continuous CPR delivering 30 compressions & 2 ventilations at a rate of approximately 3 cycles of this per minute. The student is required to complete this assessment task using a manikin provided by the Lead Teacher for the unit of competence.The student MUST demonstrate an understanding of checking for danger, checking for response of casualty using "talk & touch", sending for medical assistance appropriately, checking the casualty’s airway, checking for breathing using "look,listen & feel" and commencing chest compressions at a rate of 30 to 2 ventilations.
The student is also required to fully complete the HLTFA301C Written Incident Report Form using the information provided by the teacher in the form of a written workbased scenario when undertaking the CPR practical assessment.
2. Day 5, block 2 - Written Assessment (multiple choice) - Student is required to demonstrate competence in written assessment with a mark of 80% required to achieve competence in this assessment.
An NYC (Not Yet Competent) result for the written assessment is managed as follows-
A result of between of 70% and 79% for written assessment- the student will be advised of the result by the Lead Teacher within 2 weeks of the original assessment date. Verbal feedback will be provided on the areas of underpinning knowledge that require further research and consolidation and the student will be provided with a second opportunity to achieve competence via an oral assessment with the Lead Teacher for the unit within their RMIT enrolment period.
A result below 70% for the written assessment - the student will be advised of the result by the Lead Teacher within 2 weeks of the original assessment date. The student may be required to (but this is not limited to) attend class work again, complete further research as customised by the Lead Teacher and provide evidence of this in the form of a written document. Following evidence of further learning the student will be required to undergo a written or oral assessment as determined by the Lead Teacher for this unit.
Failure to meet the above listed requirements may see a student achieve an Not Yet Competent result for unit HLTFA301C Apply First Aid requiring a meeting with the Program Coordinator and re-enrolment incurring fees, a return to class work and completion of assessment tasks relevant to the unit at the time of the student’s re-enrolment.

Other Information
This unit is designed to assist students in the delivery of first aid according to the level and skills of application relevant to HLTFA301C Apply First Aid. This unit contains contextualised subject matter relevant to the delivery of first aid in dental practice.
Students are advised to dress in appropriate attire for day 5, block 1 (session 1) as they will be required to undertake a number of practical tasks on the floor including placing a casualty into lateral recovery position and undertaking CPR practise and assessment using a manikin.
