Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to work with teams and individuals, their standard of conduct and the initiative they take in influencing others. At this level, work will normally be carried out within routine and non routine methods and procedures which require the exercise of some discretion and judgement.  No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Frontline management provides the first level of leadership within the organisation. This unit applies to people who are making the transition from being a team member, to taking responsibility for the work and performance of others.

Frontline managers have a strong influence on the work culture, values and ethics of the teams they supervise. As such it is important that frontline managers model good practice, professionalism and confidently represent their organisation.

Details of Learning Activities

Students are required to attend all classes to complete activities and in class assessments. For most of the semester each student will work in a team. The class activities provide an opportunity to develop skills and apply theory to real life situations. The learning activities include:

Overview of Assessment

Assessment may incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements documentation, homework, assignments, group and/or individual projects, in class exercises, written and practical assessments, problem solving exercises, presentations, direct observation of actual and simulated work practice, presentation of a portfolio of evidence which may comprise documents, and/or photographs and/or video and audio files, review of products produced through work-based or course activities.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Students will be provided with feedback throughout the course to check their progress.

Assessment Tasks

Portfolio of evidence

During the course of the semester, you will collect evidence of competency against the elements for this unit.  The portfolio will consist of completed in-class and out-of-class activities together with responses to case studies and scenarios.  (Please refer to the Portfolio guide on the RMIT Learning Hub). In addition, your facilitators will provide third party reports of your performance while you take part in a simulated workplace activity (a major project) which will link all units in your program.

Final assessment

You will prepare a business report for a specific organisation (approximately 2000 words).  In this report, you will identify an opportunity for this organisation to enhance its image in the local community.  The organisation can be one with which you are familiar or one you have researched.  The opportunity to enhance the organisation’s image may have arisen as a result of entry into new markets, relocation to a new area, development of new products, activities by competitors or initiatives by government or industry bodies. (Please refer to your student text for further details about this report.)

Please note:

  • This unit will be graded Competency Achieved or Not Yet Competent (CA/NYC)
  • All Portfolio items and the Final Assessment should be submitted to the Assignment Box on Level 13 with a completed/signed assignment cover securely stapled to the front of the assessment item.
  • Do not use plastic folders or sleeves - as we need to follow sustainable work practices within the program
  • Due to the complex nature of this unit, you may be asked to demonstrate competency more than once
  • You must demonstrate competence in each of the elements of this unit in order to achieve a CA (Competency achieved)
