Course Description

This unit of competency specifies the outcomes required to plan on-site activities, including the employment of physical and human resources and the development of documentation and advice for relevant authorities concerning residential and commercial projects. The ability to identify appropriate resources and suppliers, and assess the availability of and requirements for skilled labour are essential.

1. Appraise contract documentation to identify operational requirements.

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Contract documentation is reviewed to identify any unusual aspects of construction, use of materials or penalties.
1.2. Availability of selected subcontractors to suit the job requirements is determined.
1.3. Availability of materials is assessed and confirmed with suppliers.
1.4. Site access requirements and limitations are identified and actions taken to facilitate entry.
1.5. Documentation for authorities controlling construction work is prepared and project commencement date is determined.
1.6. Procedures for controlling and recording site deliveries are implemented.

2. Implement strategies for construction operations.

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Organisational strategies for implementing construction operations are identified.
2.2. Procedures for recording the hire of plant and equipment are implemented.
2.3. Organisational OHS policy and procedures, including hazard and risk management, are implemented.
2.4. Procedures for the removal of existing services and hazardous materials are implemented in accordance with Environment Protection Agency requirements.
2.5. Procedures for the control of multiple projects are followed.

3.2. Operations details are entered into a manually prepared project schedule or computer-based software package.
3.3. Critical path of the project is defined and revised as required.

4.1. Temporary services and site accommodation requirements are determined and documented.
4.2. Plant requirements and availability dates are determined and documented with reference to contract documentation.
4.3. On-site labour requirements are determined and documented with reference to contract documentation.

Performance Criteria:

5.1. Reports on the condition of existing buildings and structures on adjacent site boundaries are completed.
5.2. Copies of condition reports are forwarded to the owners of adjacent buildings prior to commencing construction.

Students will learn through a number of planned activities (face to face classes, workplace/site visits, simulated workplace learning, online learning via blackboard and other forms of structured teaching and learning). Students will be observed and assessed through their planned activities throughout the duration of the course.

Footing systems, further MS Project skills, residential framing, portal steel framing, precast and tilt up panels, suspended slab construction, roofing, blockwork & other claddings, windows, internal services, joinery, tiling, painting, services fit-off and handover. 

Final project administration incl practical completion, handover, final certificates and defects liability period.

Week  31 & 32

Monitoring programs, Multiple projects changes to schedules and managing changes. 

Supervision of planning Communication and other Supervisory skills.

Assessment Tasks

5 in class activities based around topics including existing condition report, on site documentation, developing logical time frames, labour and materials. This group of activities weighted at 50% course mark.

Project based assessment task based around topics including claims and paymenta, on site communication, quality contol andproject administration. This assessment task is weighted at 50% course mark.

Competency requirements and Grading:

To be deemed competent students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a competency. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks.

Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met. Observation of students performing work is used to confirm competency.

All assessments for this course must be completed to achieve CAG (Competent with Pass) to pass this course. In any assessment 50% equates to being Competent with Pass.
Higher gradings are available. The final grade for the course is calculated taking into account the weighting given to the separate assessments.

Gradings available are:
CAG - 50 to 59 - Competent with Pass, CC - 60 to 69 - Competent with Credit, CDI - 70 to 79 - Competent with distinction, CHD - 80 to 100 - Competent with High Distinction. NYC - 0 to 49 - Not Yet Competent DNS Did not Submit
