Course Description

In this unit you will develop the skills and knowledge required to establish relationships, clarify needs, and then work collaboratively with people who are living with mental health issues.

This unit applies to support workers in contexts outside the mental health sector, but who come into contact with people with mental health issues. The services and support provided are not mental health specific.

This course is part of the cluster "Recovery orientated practice" and is delivered and assessed with:

Details of Learning Activities

Classes where information is shared through talks and discussions, and workshops where exercises are conducted to apply learning. Time is spent during classes and workshops for students to work on group and individual assessment tasks.

A history of mental illness & health

  • Historic understandings of MH through to today

  • Social, political & economic context of MH Work & The MH Sector

  • Legal and Ethical including MH Rights Frameworks & accountability

  • Basic into to the recovery oriented approach

Week 2

Introduction to Recovery Oriented Practise (ROP)

  • Detailed Intro to ROP – key definitions, values & assumptions

  • Evidence base for recovery-oriented practice

  • Power & Empowerment in MH Practice

  • Strengths based practice in MH Practice

  • Health promotion in MH Practice

Week 3

ROP in MH Practice 1

  • Legal & Ethical considerations of MH Work including client rights, practitioner rights & responsibilities

  • Self care & safety

  • Professional Practice/ Self- Reflective practice

Week 4

ROP in MH Practice 2

  • Speaker from org such as Mind Australia, Beyond Blue or Neami

  • Talking to people with MH issues

  • Counselling & Communication Skills & Techniques:  

- i.e. active listening/attending

- reflective listening/communication i.e. paraphrasing, recasts etc

  • Mental Health Assessment/ Crisis identification

  • When/how to refer to other service providers

Week 5

ROP in MH Practice 3

  • Support client towards self-advocacy

  • Advocate for a client in a ROP way

  • Work with stakeholders

  • Communicate using ROP Language

  • Placement preparation
