Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to undertake local area network (LAN) switch installation and configuration as part of the upgrade in an existing network or the implementation of a new network.

Element:

1. Prepare to install the network switch

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Prepare for installation in line with site specific safety requirements and enterprise occupational health and safety (OHS) processes and procedures

1.2. Notify customer to arrange access to site

1.3. Document the topology  of the LAN

1.4. Obtain current and future network capacity  predictions according to current and future business requirements from the appropriate person 

1.5. Specify the number and type of switch  required, with reference to future network requirements

1.6. Specify the requirements for network management and security, as prescribed by organisational policy

1.7. Select the switch and switch operating system software version with the appropriate features according to required specifications

2. Install and configure the network switch

Performance Criteria:

2.1. Assemble, rack mount and connect switch and peripherals  according to manufacturer's requirements

2.2. Connect user  to access points using cable  that meets the appropriate standard 

2.3. Establish a valid network connection with other network devices

2.4. Configure a network internet protocol (IP) address for the switch

2.5. Install or configure simple network management protocol (SNMP) agent software, on each switch, to collect network traffic data for the management information base (MIB) from that segment of the network and relay it to the management console

2.6. Install and configure SNMP management console software on a computer designated to be the network manager's main console, to collect network traffic data from the switch acting as agents

2.7. Manually configure the user access ports of the switch for speed and for full or half-duplex operation

Performance Criteria:

3.1. Test the switch and other network devices according to manufacturer's requirements and organisational guidelines

3.2. Test to ensure that there is connectivity across the network

3.3. Modify the network to verify SNMP management software

3.4. Make adjustments to the network, depending on test and troubleshooting results

4. Complete documentation and clean up worksite

Performance Criteria:

4.1. Tabulate test results and complete all user reports

4.2. Complete report and notify client of status of the network

4.3. Clean up and restore worksite to client's satisfaction

4.4. Secure sign off from appropriate person

Activities in this course aim to enhance your knowledge required to implement a local area network (LAN) switch installation and configuration as part of the upgrade in an existing network or the implementation of a new network. Overview of Assessment

Assessment occurs throughout the program and includes learning and assessment activities conducted in the classroom, online and in the workplace giving you the opportunity to practice and be assessed on what you are learning in a work context. You must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of a particular competency to be deemed competent. Assessment methods have been designed to measure achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over a range of assessment tasks.

Assessment will incorporate a variety of methods including technical requirements, documentation, workplace activities, in class exercises, quizzes, practical problem solving exercises and presentations. Participants are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.

Task 1. Skills Based Assessment. You are required to prepare a switch for installation, install and configure the network switch
This task relates to all elements

Task 2. Project: You will be required to create a recommendation for a network as part of an integrated project. You will also be asked to create a working prototype of this network based on the assignment brief.

Task 3. Lab: You will be required to set up SNMP software on switches to collect network traffic data.
This task relates to Elements 2 and 3

Assessment Tasks

1. Practical Assessment 2

This assessment will involve a co-assessment of two (2) courses, viz.:

ICTTEN5200A Install, configure and test a local area network switch
ICTNWK404 – Install, operate and troubleshoot a small enterprise branch network

2. Integrated Project: Airport

This assessment will involve a co-assessment of eight (8) courses, viz.:

You must be competent in all elements to successfully complete the course

You are permitted to have a maximum of 2 resubmissions for this course, however each individual assessment may only be resubmitted once.

All resubmissions must be completed and submitted no more than 7 days after your work has been graded.

Access to an internet connected computer outside of class times – Internet connected computers are available in the School of Vocational Health and Sciences labs on levels 4, 6 or 8 of building 51, 81 Victoria Street, Melbourne.
Further lab access can be found in the student lab on level 3 (ground floor) of Building 8, in Swanston Street, Melbourne; as well as RMIT Libraries.

Late work
Late work that is submitted without an application for an extension will not be corrected.

Extension of Time for submission of assessable work
A student may apply for an extension of up to 7 days from the original date. The application is lodged with the School Admin Office on Level 6, Building 51. Students requiring longer extensions must apply for Special consideration.

For missed assessments such as exams and tests, you (and your doctor, if you are ill) must fill out a special consideration form.
