Course Description

The unit applies to the preparation and production of components using table-based operations, working to defined procedures and methods.

You will develop skills and knowledge as it relates to table-based operations.  This applies to various aspects of footwear production processes, including preparation for cutting, preparation of uppers, preparation for assembly and making of shoes and components.

This course addresses the following units and all these units are clustered for delivery but may assessed separately.

MSTGN4001 - Coordinate or set up machines for product change

MSTFP3001 - Cut leather by hand

Details of Learning Activities

Integrated learning consisting of theory and practical components will be carried out in practical workshops for the skills and knowledge required in the preparation and production of components using table-based operations while producing shoes.


Teaching Schedule

Weeks 1 – 16
Practical workshops for Perform table-based operations will be conducted in conjunction with other practical based learning. Workshops will include demonstration of techniques and students will be required to demonstrate their practical skills required to Perform table-based operations. Learning will include identifying and using appropriate equipment, safe set-up of equipment & working with a range of materials and components used in footwear manufacture. Work on Perform table-based operations will be carried out during the development of the following pairs of shoes:
Week 1-4 Development of Court Shoe, Derby and Oxford Patterns 
Week 5-11 Development of Court, Derby, and Sandal - 3Pair
Week 12-16 Development of Oxford Shoe and Sandal - 2Pair

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.

All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Assessment Tasks

Student will demonstrate and answer relevant questions regarding the knowledge and skills required for Table Based Operations to a competent standard.


Student will submit for assessment 1x set of complete working footwear patterns which are to include patterns for 1 x Oxford style of Footwear.

 In addition to the patterns, students will submit various leather shapes that have been skived,  folded and stitched as per instructions. 

1pair of Roman sandals are to be produced and made to a required acceptable industry standard. Included in the production of these shoes, students will perform table based operations using safe & efficient methods.

Assessment One: Due Week 3: Oxford Working patterns 

Assessment Two: Due Week 4-7: Various Leather shapes

Assessment Three: Due week 16: 1x pair of Roman Sandal styled Footwear
