Course Description
You will develop skills and knowledge required to apply workplace policies and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for self and others. Communication skills and understanding are also required to interpret and understand what is required to provide a safe workplace. This unit also requires the ability to use initiative and enterprise and problem solving strategies to identify and act upon hazards and risks within the workplace.

Details of Learning Activities
Integrated learning activities in this course consists of theory and practical components carried out in a workshop environment. Throughout the course, you will develop the skills and knowledge to create custom-made footwear products. You will learn to use and work with a range of materials, suppliers and components used in footwear manufacturing.

Overview of Assessment
Assessment is ongoing throughout the semester and will consist of both theory and practical based exercises, predominantly in class but some out of class research and information formatting is required as well. Feedback will be provided throughout the semester on all assessment tasks.
All assessment tasks must be completed before competency can be achieved. Tasks that have not be authenticated in class as the student’s own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is encouraged.

Assessment Tasks
Task 1
Summary and Purpose of Assessment
This assessment task is one of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit.
This assessment task allows you to demonstrate your knowledge of safety procedures in the workplace, risk control, emergency procedures, and WHS policies.
Assessment Instructions
Students will be given access to a WHS Workbook on Canvas. There are 6 sections in the workbook, and each section has a series of short answer questions that relate to work relevant scenarios. At the end of each section, you will need to answer the questions in the spaces provided.
This is a written assessment and all answers must be completed individually during class time. Students can refer to the workbook whilst completing the short answer questions.
Students can complete the questions on Canvas or in hard copy. If their submission is in hard copy, it is the responsibility of the student to upload the corrected version to Canvas.
All questions must be answered correctly for you to be assessed as satisfactory for this assessment task.
Task 2
Summary and Purpose of Assessment
This assessment task is one of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, to be deemed competent for this unit.
This assessment task allows students to demonstrate their knowledge of safety procedures in the workplace, risk control, emergency procedures, and WHS policies.
Students will be presented with two simulated work health and safety scenarios and they are asked to answer a series of short answer questions relating to each incident and complete an incident report for each scenario.
Assessment Instructions
- You will be presented with two simulated work health and safety scenarios.
- Read through each scenario and answer the short answer questions.
- Complete an incident report for each scenario as if the incident occurred in the workplace.
Task 3
Summary and Purpose of Assessment
Using the Footwear Workshop as a simulated workplace, students will be observed:
- Setting up their workstation according to procedures prior to starting work.
- Undertaking a WHS checklist of the Footwear Workshop during work to identify hazards and determine risks.
- Participating in a Toolbox meeting to contribute to WHS management.
This practical assessment will allow students to demonstrate their ability to work safely to identify hazards and assess risks associated with these hazards, then follow procedures for risk control.
Assessment Instructions
What
1. You are required to carry out a pre-work check of hazards. Take your assessor to your work station and carry out the pre-start check that you would conduct to make sure it is safe to operate, in accordance with Footwear Workshop procedures.
A copy of the observation checklist your assessor will use is provided for you.
2. You will also be asked at least 3 questions by your assessor as you complete the task to help assess your knowledge and how you can apply it to work relevant situations.
3. WHS Checklist and Hazard Identification
a. You will conduct a workplace inspection to identify hazards in the Footwear workshop and the corridor on level 2 in Building 513. Your teacher will provide you with a WHS checklist. (See Appendix 1).
Walk around the Footwear workshop and the corridor on level 2 in Building 513 and determine if each item on the checklist is satisfactory or not according to the description. Mark each item on the checklist.
If the item is not satisfactory you are required to identify the hazards and mark this on the checklist.
b. Seek assistance from your teacher if you need help completing this form.
c. Use the not satisfactory information from the WHS inspection to complete the Hazard Identification table (Appendix 2)
4.Simulated Toolbox Talk
A Toolbox Talk is an informal safety meeting that focuses on safety topics related to the specific job, and in this case involves completing a WHS Checklist.
Issues such as workplace hazards and safe work practices will be discussed. The meetings will be short in duration and are conducted in the Footwear workshop at the commencement of assessment. It is one of the very effective methods to refresh the students' knowledge.
The Toolbox Talk is also intended to facilitate health and safety discussions for the Footwear workshop and promote a safety orientated culture.
You will be observed participating in a simulated Toolbox Talk at a time determined by your assessor.
Using the information, you have from your WHS Checklist (Appendix 1) you will need to:
- Identify the appropriate level and inform the relevant "Roles to be notified” of any issues you have identified (as per workplace WHS reporting procedure chart below)
- Participate in the meeting by contributing suggestions
- Make suggestions for training and development of staff
- Use the Footwear Workshop WHS procedures manual to identify the level of control required
Where
This assessment will take place in the simulated Footwear Workshop shop at RMIT by your assessor.
How
You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the checklist in Section B of this task and how well you answer the questions asked by your assessor. To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all criteria satisfactorily.
