Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to design and develop business documents using complex technical features of word processing software.

The unit applies to those who work in a range of business environments and have skills which may be applied in the provision of administrative support within an enterprise, or by technical experts responsible for producing their own word- processed documents.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Details of Learning Activities

A range of learning activities are provided in this course. These include collaborative classroom-based activities and online self-paced activities. Classroom: The collaborative classroom-based activities will include discussion, problem solving activities and opportunities to practice your skills in a simulated workplace environment. We expect you to participate and contribute in all scheduled learning activities.

Pre-and Post-Class: This is online, by logging on to your Canvas (Learning Management System) course and includes required pre-class reading and activities and post-class exercises and activities. Other self-paced activities will be delivered through various technology platforms. These may include your contribution to discussion threads, reflective journals, quizzes and interactive sessions.

Sessions: There are one face-to-face classroom sessions (tutorials) and workshop for this unit each week. There are additional activities to support learning and research.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights to your written tasks. Full assessment briefs will be provided and can be found on CANVAS.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 - Produce a Flyer With Logo

Summary and purpose:
Completing this task will allow you to demonstrate your ability to design and produce a document using graphics elements, including grouping and design principles. You will demonstrate their knowledge of general computer usage for an ergonomic workstation, breaks and exercises, and conservation procedures for an office.


Assessment Task 2 - Produce a Report

Summary and purpose:
Completing this task will allow you to demonstrate your ability to design and produce a report that includes structure and layout elements, such as Section Breaks, Tables, Headers and Footers; complex functions, such as and Table of Contents; formatting and graphics elements, such as Charts; and text formatting. You will demonstrate these activities according to organisational and task requirements by clarifying specifications and timelines with stakeholders and using the Stingray Corporation Style Guide.

Assessment Task 3 - Produce a Letter

Summary and purpose:
Completing this task will allow you to demonstrate their ability to design and produce a business letter that includes a graphics element, such as the company logo; complex functions, such as a Mail Merge with a Data Source. You will demonstrate these activities according to organisational and task requirements by using the Stingray Corporation Style Guide.

Assessment Task 4 - Produce a Letter

Summary and purpose:
Completing this task will allow you to demonstrate your ability to design and produce a form that includes structure and layout elements, such as Page Layout and borders; style elements such as Colour Fill; graphics elements, such as the company logo; complex functions, such as Fields and Controls, such as a Drop-Down List, Date, Check Box, Formulas, and Password Protection; formatting elements, such as Currency Format, and Printing functions. You will demonstrate these activities according to organisational and task requirements by using the Stingray Corporation Style Guide.

Other Information

Submission Requirements

You should:

• Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date via Canvas.
• Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
• When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use the Assessment task document that includes
a declaration and statement of authorship.
• Each page of your assessment should include a footer with your name, student number, the title of the assessment,
unit code and title and page numbers.

Late Submission Procedures

You are required to submit assessment items and/or ensure performance based assessment is completed by the due dates.

Extension of Time. If you are prevented from submitting an assessment item on time by circumstances outside your control, you may apply in advance to your teacher for an extension to the due date of up to seven calendar days.

Resubmission (VE Programs)

If you are found to be Not Yet Competent in a course assessment task (or you do not submit the assessment tasks/attend the assessment) you will be allowed one resubmission. Your teacher will provide feedback regarding what you need to do to improve and will set a new deadline for the resubmission in Canvas.

If you are still not meeting the assessment requirements you must apply to your Program Manager in writing outlining the steps you will take to demonstrate competence in your course. Your submission will be considered by the Program Team and you will be advised of the outcome as soon as possible.

Adjustments to Assessment
