Course Description

To expand students’ knowledge of the characteristics and quality standards of building materials giving particular emphasis to those commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings (past and present) and to enable students to make informed selections of these materials.

Learning Outcomes

This course will provide the learner to develop knowledge & skills and able to:
• Describe the properties, quality standards, testing, performance and visual characteristics commonly used commercial and industrial building materials in accordance with acceptable standards of construction, relevant sections of the Building Code of Australia and applicable Australian Standards.
• Investigate and select suitable materials either for typical commercial and industrial buildings or for a Commercial or industrial building project studied in conjunction with other modules, with regard to their structural adequacy, serviceability, appearance, compatibility, cost and fire resistance.
• Identify samples of building materials commonly used in commercial and industrial buildings.
