Course Description
The purpose of this course is to develop skills necessary to undertake basic construction of timber products using hand tools. This course emphasises construction within the context of design and construction of contemporary furniture.

Learning Outcomes
1. Students will be able to use hand planes to dimension timber.
2. Selection of appropriate measuring tools and the techniques involved in their use.
3. Development of skills and knowledge necessary for selection and use of appropriate hand saws.
4. Develop knowledge and skills necessary for use of hand chisels and gouges
5. Develop skills necessary for using wood turning equipment.
6. Demonstrate skills necessary for sharpening and maintaining hand tools.

In order to achieve learning outcomes, students will participate in the following activities:
- Attend and prepare notes during scheduled classes
- Participate in class discussions and demonstrations
- Research using internet, handouts and recommended references
- Prepare answers to class exercises involving theory and practical tasks

Overview of Assessment
Students will undertake small set construction projects demonstrating competency in hand tool usage.
Assessment Tasks
All assignments are graded. To pass the course, students must submit and pass each individual assessment task and achieve competency in all course elements. Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work with the teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are met.
Assessment task 1
Students to complete a journal of relavent information collected during the Botanical Gardens walk and the 3-day field trip to Gippsland. This includes written information, drawings and illustrations, material samples and photographic information.
Due week beginning 23/02/2009. This assessment addresses competency elements 1,2,3,4,5 & 6.
Mark value 10%
Assessment task 2
Students to complete the construction of at least three timber practice joints - cross halving joint, lap dovetail joint and a mortice and tenon joints. Included in this is submission of relevant note-taking, research, documentation and question & answer sheets.
Due week beginning 15/06/2009. This assessment addresses competency elements 1,2,3,4 & 6.

Assessment task 3
Students to complete the construction of a timber marking guage and a timber and metal adjustable bevel. Included in this is submission of relevant note-taking, research, documentation and question & answer sheets.
