Course Description
The competency Research and exploit photoimaging trends describes the skills and knowledge required to exploit creative and commercial opportunities as they arise from emerging trends in the photoimaging industry.
In this course, you learn to consider emerging trends while interpreting and responding to a brief. You also look at how determining appropriate lighting requirements for a range of subjects, both in the studio and on location, allows you to accurately portray or enhance your subject’s appearance.

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, you will be able to recognize trends in the photoimaging industry and make use of emerging technologies in responding to creative and commercial opportunities.
Details of Learning Activities
This unit applies to the photoimaging industry which is constantly changing due to technological, societal and consumer demands.
To retain industry currency, photoimaging practitioners need to identify emerging trends while evaluating, planning, and implementing changes to their workflows, products and technology.
This unit requires the self-directed application of skills and knowledge in order to research, evaluate, plan, coordinate manage and exploit emerging trends that arise in the photoimaging industry.
This work is usually undertaken independently (with guidance where required).

Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge of course content is assessed through participation in practical exercises, research assignments and through the application of learned skills and insights to your photography assignments.

Assessment tasks in this course are either formative or summative. Formative tasks provide the basis for ongoing feedback and can be considered a essential building blocks for the more substantial summative assessent tasks. Summative assessment tasks in this unit are graded.

Assessment Tasks:
The following briefs comprise assignment work from VART5958 Explore the descriptive and emotive nature of photo lighting.
*There are two parts to the assignments: RESEARCH and CAPTURE.
You are required to produce the necessary documentation prior to CAPTURE.
Part 1:
After assignment brief you are to research and submit a minimum of 6 images sourced from web, magazine and discussion with your teacher.
Part 2:
Execute shoot in VART5958C Emotive lighting
1) Paper, due Week 4
a paper manufacturer requires a photograph to be reproduced as a large mural for its head office reception area. Its main area of output if for the print industry. the client has requested an "abstract approach" taken to this large scale visual. However, emphasis should be placed on the paper and/or ancillary uses thereof. NB Depth of field optional, but should be sufficient for massive enlargement.

A publisher requires a double page photograph for an editorial article on a major food corporation. The product to be featured is from its line of cheese. The concept behind the shot is that cheese has been a basic food source throughout history and will remain so into the future. The photographic approach should have strong appetite appeal and thorough use of light and props. The image must convey a visual sense of the past or the future. NB Depth of field optional - should be appropriate to the style i.e. Editorial

A weekend colour supplement requires an editorial photograph for a double page spread to compliment an article on ’the artist within’. the shot has to evoke nostalgia, warmth, security, tenderness etc or the complete opposite, depending on the emotive use of light to fulfill the brief.
