Overview of Assessment
Students must demonstrate an understanding of all elements of competency to be deemed competent.
A range of assessment methods are used to assess practical skills and knowledge, for example:
• direct questioning combined with review of portfolios of evidence and third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance by the candidate
• review of authenticated documents from the workplace or training environment
• demonstration of techniques
Students are advised that they are likely to be asked to personally demonstrate their assessment work to their teacher to ensure that the relevant competency standards are being met.
Assessment Tasks
You are required to complete 3 tasks. You must successfully complete all 3 tasks to be deemed competent in this unit.
All files must be created individually and submitted or demonstrated to your teacher. Work should be demonstrated either on the day the exercise is completed, or at the beginning of the next class, as per the Teaching Schedule. You will be expected to retain soft copies of any documents submitted. In some cases printouts may be required.
TASK 1 – Pre-assessment “Report Specs” (Due: 9th Jul 2012, Week 2)
The task takes you through a process of understanding your own household environmental impact. You are required to collate your latest energy and water bills and analyse the data contained with respect to your resource usage and greenhouse gas emissions. You are required to interpret your usage and footprint and make a recommendation on how to reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and resource usage.

TASK 2 – Workplace Sustainability Policy – Part 1 (Due Date: 3rd Sep 2012 – Week 9 )
This task involves you as a key person in planning, developing and implementing organisational policy. You will conduct research to align the developed policy and ensure that it complies with legislative requirements
As part of the policy, you will develop an implementation strategy that will ensure a measurable improvement utilising the chosen benchmark indicators. In order to achieve this, you will be communicating among your group members and teacher as stakeholders to discuss possible approaches to policy development and implementation.
A policy template will be provided to you to structure the content as required. For this task section 1 of the policy template is required. This is a group assignment and you will be presenting your finding to your teacher.
TASK 3 – Workplace Sustainability Policy – Part 2 & 3 (Due Date: 15th Oct 2012 – Week 15)
In this task you will continue developing the policy of Task 2 to include data analysis on resource consumption using software systems for recording and filing documentation for measurement of current usage. Using word processing and other basic software for interpreting charts, flowcharts, graphs and other visual data and information you will present the outcome of your data analysis. To complete section 2 and 3 of the policy, you are also required to review and improve your policy by identifying improvements and benchmarking against industry best practice and attempt new approaches continuously over time. This is a group assignment and you will be presenting your finding to your class at the due date.

Submission Requirements
Assessment tasks need to be submitted via Blackboard.
You should:
- Ensure that you submit assessments on or before the due date. If your performance in the assessment is affected by unexpected circumstances, you should consider applying for Special Consideration. Information on the process and application forms is available at http://rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=ls0ydfokry9rz website.
- Always retain a copy of your assessment tasks. (hard copy and soft copy)
- When you submit work for assessment at RMIT University you need to use a cover sheet that includes a declaration and statement of authorship. You must complete, sign and submit a cover sheet with all work you submit for assessment, whether individual or group work. On the cover sheet you declare that the work you are presenting for assessment is your own work. An assignment cover sheet for submission of work for assessment is available on blackboard.

Marking Guide (Competency):
Vocational Education and Training (VET) is based on current industry needs and the focus on preparing you for the workplace. Because VET courses are informed by practical application of knowledge and skills, they are based on a system known as ‘competency based training’ (CBT).
So when you are assessed in VET it is about whether you are competent to do the job, as well as having a firm grasp on the knowledge and skills required to do that job, as opposed to traditional curriculum based education settings that are often based on knowledge retention.
You need to demonstrate you are competent in each element of the unit of competency you are studying.
You will receive feedback on each assessment task that will inform you whether you are competent or not and how well you are performing. Once competent in all elements of the unit you receive a competency grading.
Please refer to the Final Grades table below.
Marking Guide (Grading):
After achieving competency we then grade your performance in the unit; this gives you the opportunity to have the level of your performance formally recognized against industry standards and employability skills.
The grading is according to the following criteria:
1.LEVEL OF INDEPENDENCE, INITIATIVE, ENTERPRISE AND PERFORMANCE OF WORK TASK
We are looking for a high level of ability to complete all tasks as per the specifications required as well as demonstrating a high level of initiative and independent thought in your approaches to developing and implementing a sustainability policy.
2.DEMONSTRATED BREADTH OF UNDERPINNING KNOWLEDGE AND A WILLINGNESS TO CONTINUE LEARNING
We are looking for depth of understanding of the environmental issues facing the IT industry as well as a comprehensive knowledge of best practice sustainability strategies and methods for implementing and continuously improving sustainable work practices in the workplace.
3.TECHNIQUES & PROCESSES, TECHNOLOGY SKILLS AND PROBLEM SOLVING
We are looking for appropriate use of technology to assist in preparing a clear and accurate policy suitable for implementation in the workplace. You also need to show an understanding of the kinds of problems that can arise in promoting sustainable work practices and how these might be addressed.
4.WORK ORGANISATION, PLANNING AND SELF MANAGEMENT
We expect to see ongoing progress on class discussions and exercises and full utilisation of Blackboard as per course requirements and timely submission of all required assessment tasks.
5.COMMUNICATION, PEOPLE NETWORKING, LANGUAGE AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND TEAMWORK
We expect to see contributions to relevant discussions and scheduled team sessions. In addition your tasks should demonstrate a very good understanding of strategies for a collaborative approach towards teamwork and interpersonal skills.
