Course Description

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to construct oral splints.
All procedures are carried out in accordance with occupational health and safety policies and procedures, current infection control guidelines, Australian and New Zealand Standards, state/territory legislative requirements and organisation policy.

1. Construct splint

Performance Criteria:

1.1 Select materials for the construction of splint in accordance with prescription
1.2 Construct splint in accordance with prescription
1.3 Process splint in accordance with manufacturer recommendations


2. Trim, shape and finish

Performance Criteria:

2.1 Trim splint according to material selection
2.2 Shape splint according to prescription and recheck on articulator
2.3 Evaluate the splint
2.4 Finish the splint appropriately according to type of material selected
2.5 Decontaminate the appliance in accordance with infection control guidelines
2.6 Place the splint in a suitable container for dispatch

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course the participants will be able to demonstrate, on a consistent basis, the process involved in constructing oral splints

Theoretical examination - pass mark 60%

Assessment Matrix

CA (Competency Achieved) for the unit HLTDT517D Construct Oral Splints is as follows:

Pass result (PX or CA) for the following theoretical and practical assessments

  1. Construct Oral Splints exam
  2. PRAC EXAM - Md heat cured acrylic splint 

Failure to complete any of the above listed tasks/assessments will result in an NYC not yet competent result for unit HLTDT517D Construct Oral Splints. An NYC (not yet competent) result will be entered in the student record.This will result in non-completion of this unit of competence requiring re-enrolment incurring fees and a return to class work and completion of any relevant assessments at the time of the re-enrolment.

Non completion or non-submission of compulsory tasks:

Failure to complete any or all of the compulsory tasks listed above will prevent the student from achieving a CA (competency achieved) result for unit HLTDT517D Construct Oral Splints. This will result in the student not completing the unit successfully. NYC (not yet competent) will be recorded and re enrolment will be required to continue the unit/program. Fees will be incurred. Please note: A second opportunity for assessment will not be granted unless the student has applied for and been granted special consideration as per RMIT assessment policy.

Assessment Appeal Process:
The Appeals Against Assessment policy and procedure applies to all coursework programs in all careers. The appeal process is staged and students are required to follow each stage in order to ensure their full entitlement to appeal is available

Students are required to support the learning outcomes this Unit with work based experience and/ or further self managed research to support positive outcomes in this Unit.

To undertake practical exercises and /or assessment students MUST present for the assessment process as follows:

Please note these are also WH&S requirements for clinical safety.

In appropriate practical class attire (Protective clothing for legs - if shorts, must cover knees, lab coat, safety glasses)
Fully covered in leather(not suede) footwear

Hair to be contained by tying back or in appropriate hair cover.
No artificial fingernails to be worn
The wearing of henna is acceptable.
Short, clean fingernails
No jewellery to be worn on the hands or wrists. Wedding rings or jewellery that cannot be removed for cultural reasons must be taped with an appropriate waterproof tape
All cuts/ skin abrasions on the hands or wrists must be covered with a waterproof dressing

A student that is non-compliant with any of the above requirements will not be permitted to undertake practical exercises or assessment at the scheduled time. The student will be rescheduled to undertake assessment at a later date.
