Course Description

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use a range of CADD program functions and features to produce drawings. People working in many industries require the skills and knowledge in this unit, and the unit is written to allow for contextualisation to a particular industry context. Within the cultural industries this unit is relevant for people working across multiple sectors. The focus of this unit is on the technical skills required to operate CADD, and design skills are found in other units within the Visual Arts Craft and Design Training Package.

Details of Learning Activities

In Class Activities will include:

  • Use of class computers for the preparation of working drawings
  • Internet use for dowloading both images and blocks used in the project
  • On-line CAD drawing tutorials
  • On-line quizzes done
  • In class drawing activities / project work
  • In class self assessment
  • A number of new 2D drawings will be completed in the semester in a standard that would be expected in industry

Out of class activities will include:

  • Online video tutorials and quizzes
  • Sourcing of images
  • Independent project based work

As assessment will involve student group interaction, it is in your interest to attend all classes.

Self Directed Learning - Some activities will include a self directed learning approach, self-directed learning refers to organised activities that students undertake independently, either as individuals or with other students, that are supervised by a teacher. This may include workplace research, library assignments, field trips and work placements.

  • Software - "AutoCAD 2014" software is available for access via RMIT for all students enrolled in the program. Authorisation for the software can also be sought via AutoDesk. Details will be given in class
  • Authorisation - You can then receive an authorisation for the use of the software for 36 months at a time direct from AutoDesk (details will be supplied in first week)
  • Self paced online tutorial - If you find you are struggling with Revit, as an RMIT student you will have access to the Lynda.com website tutorials. This can only be done for free via the link below:

  • Building 94, level 5, room 13 will be available most nights after 6pm till midnight (refer to to timetable located on door of room). Note, an "access" form will need to be filled in and approved prior to use of this room.
  • During the course, video files will be uploaded into the relevant blackboard folder for assistance


Overview of Assessment

The following evidence is critical to the judgement of competence in this unit:
• ability to use the standard features and functions of a CADD program to produce drawings
• knowledge of CADD capabilities and uses in relation to the specific industry context.

Assessment for this course will be project based.


Assessment Tasks

Task 1:
Whilst learning the basics of drawing in AutoCAD 2016, you will create a very basic floor plan of a building.
This will include all appropriate drawing standards.  The extent of the drawing is outlined in a brief that is
available in blackboard. This is an assessible task (as either competent or not yet competent).
The drawing is to be ammended if below standard until competency is attained.

Task 2:
In further development of AutoCAD commands and use, you will create another floor plan with more detail.
This will included commands used to finish off a drawing for printing.  The extent of the drawing is outlined
in a brief that is available in blackboard. This also is an assessable task (as either competent or not yet
competent).  The drawing is to be amended if below standard until competency is attained.

Task 3:
In further development of AutoCAD commands and use, you will detail up a bathroom in the drawing created
in task 2. This will include detailing the fixtures to be installed in the bathroom.
