Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to perform advanced sound editing. This involves assessing the quality of original recorded sound against production requirements, determining the scope of the sound-editing project, preparing source materials for sound editing, editing sound in line with production requirements, and applying sound effects to enhance the final product. No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of endorsement.

Please note that course delivery will be broken into two parts; theory and practical.

1.1 Consult with relevant people to confirm editing requirements with reference to production documentation

2.1 Check sound editing software and equipment is operational and appropriate for the production requirements

2.2 Resolve technical faults and problems according to workplace procedures

2.3 Undertake all activities according to work health and safety (WHS) procedures

2.4 Confirm that required files are accessible to all relevant people 2.5 Prepare sufficient work copies of original dialogue and sound sources to meet production requirements

2.6 Complete documentation according to production requirements and enterprise procedures

3. Clean up dialogue

Performance Criteria:


3.1 Advise relevant people on automated dialogue replacement requirements

3.2 Strip synchronous sound effects from dialogue as required

3.3 Clean up synchronous sounds, and confirm all dialogue and sound edits fit together smoothly

3.4 Find alternative dialogue and sound recordings as required, and determine if any need to be re-recorded to meet production requirements

3.5 Oversee the recording of post-sync dialogue and sound as required, ensuring relevant people have copies of the appropriate documentation

3.6 Backup dialogue and sound files regularly

3.7 Discuss quality of edited material with relevant people, and adjust as required

3.8 Present final edit to relevant people for evaluation against production requirements

4.1 Confirm track layout of final edit is legible, consistent and clearly indicates range of different dialogue and sound

4.2 Save and deliver post-production master copy in correct format

4.3 Duplicate post-production master copy as required

4.4 Store edited materials according to production requirements and enterprise procedures

4.5 Confirm work environment is cleaned after use, and restored to pre-editing condition

Learning Outcomes


On successful completion of this unit you will achieve an understanding of the principles governing digital audio recording devices and the skills and knowledge required to perform advanced sound editing.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment tasks include a theory test, drum playlist editing, dialogue editing skills and a major audio editing project. Training and assessment will include covering industry standard DAW systems.


Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.  

To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.
