This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to construct removable acrylic partial dentures.

Introduction/Overview of the unit Expectations for this unit: attendance, theory material, practical material, activities and assessment requirements. Review safety & PPE, equipment, and materials. Practical exercise review: unit outline, tools, logbooks, safety, PPE, daily plan (practical work, daily demonstrations and knowledge review), time management and moving through the tasks.
Demonstration Cases The stages of construction will be shown as a preview of the processes that we will be undertaking.
Theory Delivery The main elements of the theory material will be reviewed in this session. It would be best if you have made yourself familiar with the material before the beginning of the session. You will need to continue to review this material out-of-class, to ensure that you have an understanding of the aspects of the course. Your understanding of the theory material will be evaluated through an Open Book Assessment which will be conducted in-class during the course. You must pass this assessment (and the practical assessment) to receive a passing grade for the course.

Knowledge Assessment: Today you will complete the compulsory, open-book knowledge assessment that will be conducted for this course. The assessment will take place in the computer lab under exam conditions. Overview of Assessment
You must show evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit, manage tasks and manage contingencies in the context of the job role. There must be evidence that you have:
• read and correctly interpreted 1 laboratory work order for removable acrylic partial denture
• used standard precautions and safe work practices during the set-up and waxing of partial dentures to produce 1 acrylic partial denture with a combination of bounded and free end saddle areas, suitable for insertion in the mouth
• critically evaluated the 1 acrylic partial denture produced to meet technical laboratory and patient requirements.
To be deemed competent you must demonstrate an understanding of all aspects required of the competency.
Regular attendance is necessary.
Assessment methods have been designed to measure your achievement of each competency in a flexible manner over multiple tasks and consist of theory and practical based tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed as Competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace.
To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task.

Re-submissions:
You will be given two (2) attempts for each assessment to demonstrate the required skills. If you do not submit an assessment on the first date provided however you submit on the resubmission date, this work submitted on the resubmission date will be the only attempt allowed.
An additional attempt beyond those stipulated above can only be offered after discussions between the Teacher and the Program Coordinator and is not automatic. Resubmissions beyond two (2) attempts are at the discretion of the Program Coordinator and Program Manager after a conversation is had by the Teacher, Program Coordinator and Program Manager. A 3rd attempt consideration will take into account class attendance (80-100% requirement), interaction within class and communication with the class Teacher.

Attendance:
Your learning experience will involve class-based teaching, discussions, demonstrations and practical exercises. It is strongly advised that you attend all timetabled sessions. This will allow you to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring you the maximum opportunity to complete this course successfully.
If you attend late to a lab/clinic/practical teaching session you must wait to be allowed entrance to the lab/clinic as this can pose a WHS issue, especially if specialised equipment is being used and demonstrated. Teachers are permitted to not allow you to use equipment if formal training has been missed, if this happens you must request a meeting with the teacher and the Program Coordinator to discuss moving forward.
If you miss an assessment or assessable practical class, you need to apply for Special Consideration. The Special Consideration Department will ask you to provide a medical certificate or give other evidence to support your request. Once Special Consideration has been applied for, you will wait for the result from the Department and then you will contact your teacher with the outcome of the result.

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment on time by circumstances outside your control, you may apply for an extension of up to seven (7) calendar days.
