Course Description

This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to manage a facility and its inventory requirements, in various contexts within the transport and logistics industry.

It includes identifying space, safety and security requirements; developing a documentation system; designing storage zones and evaluating facility utilisation.

This unit generally applies to those who provide leadership of others individually or in teams.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Organisational medium-term and long-term storage needs are assessed to facilitate planning, in accordance with the enterprise business plan and legislative requirements

Details of Learning Activities

The delivery of this subject will be face to face on-campus. 

The activities will include some elements of lecture style, some research-based and self directed learning. There will be a large part of the activities incorporating role play and scenario based problem solving exercises.

The emphasis will be mainly on interactive learning using online resources written explicitly for this course which is focused on both Transport Management Systems and the Procedures used in everyday operations.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course is ongoing throughout the semester. Your knowledge and understanding of course content is assessed through participation in class exercises, oral/written presentations and through the application of learned skills and insights. Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1 - Design a Facility for Effective use of Inventory – Role Play  

Purpose

This role play and portfolio assessment is the first of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit.   

 This role play and portfolio assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to work in a team where you will design a distribution centre / warehouse facility from the perspective of Safety, Security and Efficiency.  

This will require you to gain and apply knowledge with respect to all legislation, various codes of practice and regulations. 

You will produce a variety of documents including high level facility maps and worksheets that will feature all of the results of your team’s work. These maps and worksheets will form be your submission, together with your answers to 8 knowledge questions. 

 In a defined part of this task, you will need to lead part of the discussion where you will be required to prioritise and coordinate your colleagues in the team, and this must be witnessed by your teacher. 

By putting yourself in the role of a SolveIT employee you are working as a part of the DELs (Distribution, Engineered Logistics Solutions) Team. 

 After you have completed all of the tasks, you will have the foundational knowledge required to undertake Assessment Tasks 2 & 3. 

 

Assessment Task 2 - Inventory planning and tools 

Purpose

This assessment is the second of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this unit.

This assessment will enable you to develop skills in building tools to analyse and collect data. These tools will enable you to undertake primary inventory and record collecting data and analysis.

Assessment Task 3 - Post Implementation Review and Establishment of Reporting - Portfolio 

Purpose

This portfolio assessment task is the third of three assessment tasks you need to complete satisfactorily, in order to be deemed competent for this cluster.   

This portfolio assessment will allow you to demonstrate your ability to report on and assess the performance of an operation at the post implementation stage.  

You will be expected to complete two reports.  

  • Form 1 - Post Implementation Review Form 
  • Form 2 - Weekly CCOP Report 

After you have completed both reports, you are ready to submit these for Assessment 3.
