Course Description

This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to identify children and young people who are at risk and report in line with legislative requirements. This work occurs within legislative and policy frameworks and carries a duty of care responsibility.

This unit applies to workers in a range of job roles providing services to children and young people including in community services and health contexts.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State or Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice

Performance Criteria:

1.1. Observe signs and indicators to identify children, families and young people at risk of domestic violence, abuse and neglect. 1.2. Collect information and document signs and indicators of abuse in accordance with legislative requirements and organisational policies and procedures. 1.3. Use communication and information gathering techniques with children and young people according to organisational policies and procedures.

3.1. Recognise and uphold the rights of children and young people in the provision of services. 3.2. Employ ethical practices and observe professional boundaries when working with children and young people. 3.3. 2.1. Ensure documentation in person's record is completed accurately, in a detailed and factual manner, according to organisational policies and procedures for privacy and confidentiality. 2.2. Students are given two (2) attempts for each assessment to demonstrate the required skills. A third (3rd) attempt can only be offered after discussions between teacher and the Program Coordinator and is not automatic. Resubmissions beyond two (2) attempts are at the discretion of the teacher and/or coordinator.

Assessment Tasks

Students enrolled in Vocational Education and Training qualifications are assessed for Competency. To be assessed competent means you have consistently demonstrated the required knowledge and skills at a standard expected in the workplace. To be assessed as Competent in this course, you will need to complete each assessment task to a satisfactory standard. You will receive feedback from the teacher at the conclusion of each assessment task. You will be given two (2) attempts for each assessment to demonstrate the required skills. A third (3rd) attempt can only be offered after discussions between teacher and the Program Coordinator and is not automatic. Resubmissions beyond two (2) attempts are at the discretion of the teacher and/or coordinator.

Other Information

Attendance:

This unit is part of The Diploma of Youth Work program. Your program consists of face to face classes, including unsupervised Directed Study. It is strongly advised you attend all sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to gain the competency.

Your learning experience will involve class-based teaching, discussion, demonstration and practical exercises.

It is required that you attend all timetabled sessions. You must attend a minimum of 80% of all classes in order to successfully complete each unit.

Extensions of time for submission of assessable work:

If you are prevented from submitting an assessment on time by circumstances outside your control you may apply for an extension of up to seven (7) calendar days in writing (email) to your Program Coordinator one working day BEFORE the due date. Where an extension of greater than seven days is needed, you must apply for special consideration.

Special consideration:
