This course is to provide training in helicopter aerodynamics and control.

Learning Outcomes

1. Explain in words and mathematical terms the application of  ’ one dimensional momentum’ theory to rotor hovering and axial flight.
2. Analyse the relationship between hover power and rotor size.
3. Analyse the application of ’blade element theory’ to rotor hovering and axial flight.
4. Analyse the relationship between disc loading and vertical drag.
5. Analyse the factors which provide a measure of ’hovering figure of merit’.
6. Analyse the balance of force required for forward flight performance.
7. Analyse the application of blade element theory to forward flight..
8. Calculate power requirements in forward flight.
9. Perfoem aerodynamic calculations for manoeuvring flight.
10.Analyse and solve handling problems associated with external loads.

To successfully complete this course the student is required to pass written assessment tasks and demonstrate skills and ability by completing pratical tasks to aerospace standard.
