Course Description
The purpose of this module is to provide participants with the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to extend the student’s application of the study of Statics to include Two and Three Dimensional Force Analysis of Structures and mechanical componentry. This module also facilitates articulation to Degree courses in Engineering (Mechanical & Manufacturing).
Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
The following modules (or equivalents) should be preferably completed prior to, or in conjunction with, this module:
EA 859 Statics (Coplanar Force Systems),
EA 804 Introductory Strength of Materials
VBH624 Advanced Engineering Mathematics 1
National Competency Codes and Titles
National Element Code & Title: |
VBG875 Advanced Statics |
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module the learner should be able to:
1. Solve problems involving the analysis of basic Two Dimensional (coplanar) force and couple systems.
2. Represent forces and moments as Three Dimensional Cartesian vectors and solve problems involving basic three dimensional applications
3. Solve problems involving the free-body diagram analysis of Two Dimensional structures and assemblies subjected to forces and couples.
4. Solve problems involving the free-body diagram analysis of Three Dimensional structures and assemblies subjected to forces and couples.
5. Construct Shear Force and Bending Moment Diagrams for structures and mechanical components/assemblies subjected to Two Dimensional Force Systems.
6. Construct Shear Force and Bending Moment and Torque Diagrams for structures and mechanical components/ assemblies subjected to Three Dimensional Force Systems.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment for this module will consist of the following:
Practical laboratory activities, a progressive written test or assignment and a end of module written exam
