This unit covers the skills and knowledge to develop and present a fashion range to the client

Performance Criteria:


1.1 Fashion range development brief is reviewed and details checked to ensure correct interpretation.
1.2 Parameters of the project are established.
1.3 Roles of design team members are clarified.
2.1 Fashion range trends are researched and relevant information relating to the project is obtained, including availability of materials.
2.2 Styles, colours, stories or themes of fashion ranges are analysed.
2.3 Fabric selection, availability and performance characteristics are analysed.
2.4 Supply chains for range development are identified.
3.1 Profile of target market population is obtained.
3.2 Demographics of target market are identified.
3.3 Intended purpose of fashion range is established.
3.4 Current styles and fashion trends are analysed.
4.1 Concepts are developed to identify range of possibilities.
4.2 A range of storyboard themes is prepared related to fabrics, theme, stories and colours.
4.3 Fashion range accessorising is planned.
4.4 Appropriate concepts are selected for development in consultation with design team.

6.4 Total range costs are calculated, which include labour, materials and overhead cost estimates.
6.5 Amendments or modifications to range are negotiated and agreed upon as required to ensure design is within budget.
7.1 Features and benefits of fashion range are presented in a manner that encourages acceptance.
7.2 Client or workplace brief requirements are addressed in the presentation.
8.1 Records of sample and range development, including details of style, construction, fabrics, patterns, costs and grading are produced.
8.2 Records are maintained and reports prepared, where necessary.


Learning Outcomes


This unit applies to design development and presentation of a fashion range based on an occasion, theme or storyline. Design concept development processes will be conducted according to workplace practices and procedures.

Overview of Assessment

Your assessment tasks are a combination of practical and theoretical. Assessment will occur throughout the course, enabling you to receive ongoing feedback about your progress. Written feedback will be provided for each piece of work.

Authentication of Work

PLEASE NOTE: Tasks that work that has not been authenticated during class as your own work will not be considered for assessment. Regular attendance is necessary.

You will be given further information about the assessment tasks in class.


Assessment Tasks

Assessment is ongoing through observation and demonstration.

On completion of the Project, a portfolio of work is submitted. The portfolio contains several pieces of work:

1. Design Storyboards
2. Patterns on Card
3. A collection of garments representing the fashion range.
4. A Business Plan.
5. Supporting documentation in the format of a bound report.
You are assessed on technical skills and knowledge as well as a host of relevant employability skills such as communication, teamwork, negotiation and the ability to project manage.

Graded Assessment

A pass in each assessment will result in a grade for the student. Where a pass is achieved competency for that assessment is given. Where there are multiple assessments for a single competency the students must achieve competency (a pass) in each assessment to be deemed competent. Competency MUST be achieved in all assessments of the course for a graded result to be obtained.
