Course Description
This unit covers the skills and knowledge to analyse and implement specialised patternmaking technologies. It is taught in conjunction with a unit titled ’Aplly studio processes to create and produce designs for commercial production’ and is a key part of your work integrated learning experience. The integration of work based learning and academic learning, commonly referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), will allow you to solve authentic industry problems or address real issues faced in organisations.

Learning Outcomes
The unit applies to the analysing workplace requirements for the introduction or upgrading of specialised patternmaking technologies, assessing and implementing appropriate technologies into the workplace and managing the change process associated with the implementation.
Details of Learning Activities
This course is part of a learning cluster Industry Partnerships Project with LMFTD6008AB Apply studio processes to create and produce designs for commercial production.
Blended learning, consisting of classroom activities and practical workshops
Teaching Schedule
WEEK 1
Students visit Industry Partner to discuss brief and discover scope
• Research market
• Research trends
• Strategize group submission with team members and class
• Develop team and class synergy
• Critical path identified and analyzed.
WEEK2
Story board outline ready for critique these will include:
• Fashion Range concepts
• Styles black and white drawings for approximately 20 garments suitable for the target market
• Source Trims & accessories
• Production Feasibility
• Other considerations relating to outline
Story boards ready for team and class submission to client
WEEK 3
Commence Pattern Work this will include
Identify target market
Confirm fabric, trims & accessories supported by fabric testing for suitability of product for target market
Confirm silhouettes and Block shapes
Patternmaking Technology plan developed including objectives & time frame
Critical paths are re analyzed
Commence Reporting process this will include
• Client / Target market needs
• Pricing and budget
• Costing and production strategies
• Global Fashion Trends
• Previous styling analyzed
• Teamwork problems and solutions

Students are required to research websites, fashion magazines, retail stores for benchmark and inspiration product and websites and factories for equipment for specialised textile.
Overview of Assessment
Detailed course and assessment requirements and information will be made available to you first week of class. Specific details will be explained to you during scheduled classes.
This course comprises both practical and theory components. You will be expected to attend and participate in class activities.
As well as class activities you will be required to undertake research and assessment practice outside of regular class times and participate in formal assessment tasks.
This course will provide you and your class with the opportunity to receive industry feedback on your learning activities or assessment tasks.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment is ongoing through observation and demonstration.
On completion of the project, a portfolio of work is submitted containing several pieces of work.
1. Supporting documentation in the format of the bound report to include:
• Research of the market type identifying like type businesses. Include proof of research identifying price points garment types, construction details, fabrics, silhouettes.
• Production Specifications and other documentation to support testing of design features, fabrics, machinery, and patterns.
2. Coloured storyboards to reflect the client brief
• Technical diagrams of a wider range of garments to suit client brief
3. Patterns on card with supporting toiles and notes relating to problem solving of design aspects
4. A collection of garments representing a fashion range
5. A reflective journal demonstrating the journey of learning as an individual and as a team.
The project is addressed holistically based upon the contents of the portfolio and observation/ demonstration of employability skills. You are assessed on technical skills and knowledge as well as a host of employability skills such as business style, communication, teamwork, negotiation and the ability of the student to manage the project
