Purpose of the Program

Software engineering is the study and application of engineering methodologies and practices to the design, development, and maintenance of software and embedded systems. This program also focuses on technology management and engineering project management.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering)(Honours) provides you with an internship opportunity at the end of the program. You may also be able to undertake an industry-sponsored design project in your final year.

You will undertake a capstone experience in the courses OENG1183 Engineering Capstone Project Part

A and OENG1185 Engineering Capstone Project Part B, in which you will conduct an independent research project that can be analytical, experimental, design or computational in nature (or some combination of these). You will also work as an intern in one of our industry partners as part of our OENG1198 Professional Engineering Experience.

With a Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) (Honours) you can be competitive for many mid- level positions in software development as well as for jobs in related fields like cloud computing, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data analytics, and cybersecurity. You can apply for positions in the internet, communications, healthcare, IT services and gaming industries. You can also work on embedded software projects. This type of software is used in virtually every industry, from medicine to aeronautics. Professionals who are new to the field often start out as programmers and work their way up to positions of greater responsibility, including as a software architect or project manager. Even at the entry level, employers sometimes specify that applicants should be knowledgeable about all stages of project work. Employers may be educational companies, publishers, credit unions, or even search engine giants. Companies such as Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft hire strong candidates at the bachelor’s level for a range of positions. In addition, senior projects and internships will give you opportunities to solve real-world problems and often lead to job offers after graduation.

The program is primarily delivered in face-to-face and blended learning modes at the South Saigon Campus.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation
Articulation agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in a higher level qualification. 

Pathways
Pathways refer to related programs for which you may be eligible once you have graduated from your current program.  As a successful graduate of this program, you may (upon application) be eligible to proceed to a coursework Masters degree in Software Engineering or related fields, or even to a research degree including Masters by Research or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Acceptance into these programs would be subject to each program's entry requirements.

Entrance requirements

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of a Vietnamese high school certificate with a minimum overall average score of 7 from all graded subjects taken in the final year of Senior High School, or equivalent. High school mathematics with a minimum score of 6.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.

If you do not meet the above English language requirements you may be offered pre-program English (for one or two semesters) which can be combined in a pathways program into the Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) (Honours) if both English and the mathematics prerequisites are not met.

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation

The Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) (Honours) is provisionally accredited by Engineers Australia. Engineers Australia is the professional body responsible for the accreditation of higher education programs that prepare students to practise as professional engineers. Engineering programs normally go through two stages of accreditation: 

  • Provisional accreditation – Engineers Australia evaluates the program content, structure, delivery and assessment methods. On successful evaluation, the new program is awarded provisional accreditation status. 
  • Full accreditation – Once the program has a cohort of graduates, Engineers Australia re-evaluates it:  this time with a view to awarding full accreditation. Engineers Australia is a signatory to the Washington Accord. This means that programs with full accreditation are internationally recognised and graduates are able to practise as professional engineers in many countries around the world.

Industry Links

The Bachelor of Engineering (Software Engineering) (Honours) program has an Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). Membership is diverse and drawn from external industry and professional institutions. These committees help inform program development and ensure that program content and student learning outcomes remain closely aligned with the needs of future employers. In addition, academic staff maintain connections with industry to develop and deliver work integrated learning experiences as well as offer advice on professional careers. In addition, on a number of occasions industry has provided direct support by donating laboratory equipment.

Industry links are also encouraged through industry sponsored design projects usually undertake in your final year (as part of OENG1183 Engineering Capstone Project Part A and OENG1185 Engineering Capstone Project Part B). You also have the opportunity of undertaking an Industry Placement for up to twelve months with one of our industry partners as part of OENG1198 Professional Engineering Experience.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
